Default Brake Rotors

2016 IS 200t F Sport

My front brakes need replacing for the first time since I've bought the car brand new. My Lexus dealer is saying I need to replace my rotors ( I call bs) and they're saying that resurfacing isn't the same because Its the performance brakes. Have any of you been told this same thing before?

Dealer told me the same thing. I had mine resurfaced once due to it the rotor still having a good amount of thickness left on it. Worked fine until now (5K later). Planning on replacing them shortly

I go to school out of town so I called up my dealer back home to see if I was being ripped off because the dealer here at my school is known to upcharge and charge for extra stuff, turns out that my service adviser said the same thing. Better off replacing it then resurfacing. I ended up buying the same OEM parts online for $225 compared to the $400 something my dealer here was asking.

I originally wanted to resurface the rotors but as one of the guys said earlier in the forum he had to eventually replace the rotors 5k miles or so later. Everyone I've talked to told me that it was better off to replace then resurface

I would just replace them. I wish i had just spent the money and replaced them because now I am going back to pay them to work on them again.

My IS200t chews through front pads every 16K, like clockwork. Also have to replace the rotors every other time, can only turn them once. I don’t drive this car hard at all, 90% freeway.

I always replace pads and rotors at the same time. Just resurfacing rotors eats the pads much faster. Or it seems that way to me. Plus the cost is so close for a DIY job. Never have checked the cost of having the dealership or Indy do it.

It's a Good Practice to replace Rotors and Pads at the same time

Do you necessarily have to? No. Should you? Yes

I just replaced the pads on my 2016 IS. My Rotors were in good shape (No lip and minimal rust) so I just let them be.

What is the life expectancy of the front pads? I currently have an 17 IS300 and have noticed a squeal from my front brakes. Just turned 15k on it, just seems a bit premature I’m thinking, but not sure as to why it is doing this already. Any insights would be appreciated.

I just had my two fronts replaced at 18,000 miles. I could hear them squeeking whenever I'd stop. I got the low-dust pads (cheaper, last longer) and stop almost just as good. You'll notice a difference though.
For labor+both parts it costed me $280 at a toyota dealership compared to $800 at the lexus dealership.

I can typically get through 2 sets of pads before I need to replace the rotors.

Your mileage may vary, (I got about 20-24k miles out of each set of pads)

Jeff

Wow, I appreciate the replies, I didn’t expect they would wear so quick. I guess I’ll just have to add brakes to the punch list of things to do for my little ride. Thanks again!

I had my front pads replaced around 35k then resurfaced the front rotors too. Now, I am in dire need of replacing both the rotors and pads for front and rear. The car is now 72k. The rear pads is actually fine for another 10-15k, but I might as well change it. I drive a 350.

Related question: I have a 2016 200t F-Sport and I just replaced the pads yesterday (at 18K). Pads actually had life left but the brake dust was insufferable so I went with Akebono. However while making the swap I noticed the rotor has a small lip. Difficult to measure but maybe 1mm. Rest of the rotor surface is fine. So how much wear can you have before you replace? Is there an indicator? Noise maybe?
