Default Bad braking

Car has 174k on it. Brakes work decent, but when I really need to stop, and press halfway decent, it gets scary. Brought the car to our trusted mechanic, said the brakes are fine. I'm assuming the suspension is still stock. Being the car has 174k, it is safe to assume the suspension is probably really worn and causing this, correct?

Just want to double check before I drop money replacing suspension.

You are kind of vague about the scary part. Do you lose gripping power when you brake hard?

Our stock brakes sucks anyway, so just upgrade to aftermarkets.

My car has 20k and its terrible if you are trying to do a emergency stop.

At 174k, struts are probably done though.
