Quote: This is the oldest and highest mileage car I have every owned. But love it... Anyways I just ordered lower ball joints. Should I do the tie rods also?
May as well since you'll have the LBJ off anyway.

Not that hard, just got to have the right tools. Maybe the link below will help. btw, why are you replacing only one. I'd do them both. If one is bad, the other one probably isn't far behind.

In the beginning of this thread I been reading that the LBJ from Sewell were going for about $60 per side. I am looking at their prices now, $98 each. Is this the correct part 43340- 39415? the whole ball joint assembly correct, whats up with the price increase?

So sorry to hear that !
The same thing happened to my husband and I a few weeks ago and we thought the noise was the left upper control arm so we ordered it and then this happens and it looked the same as your wheel luckily we were pulling out of the parking space at the movie theater, embarrassing but safe. My husband replaced the ball joint in our driveway in a couple of hours and he is no mechanic and the car is running fine, I even took it to Firestone after he was done and got the Fall Care Inspection and everything checked out accept I learned that I had no mounting bolts on my rear struts??????????

Is there a such thing as just buying the bolts instead of the whole mounting kit?

you can pick up the bolts at any Autozone or any parts store . the rears should be the same as the fronts .

I too had to get the left and right ball joints changed out.
It was making a creeking / rusted part sound when turning the steering wheel left or right.
Lucky i was able to drive to repair show today to get it fix. It started happening to the car couple of days ago. And the noise got obvious by yesterday.

I have 135K mi. on the car now. Its 1999 GS400. It is lowered also.

Thanks to this thread, alot of people can read about this and really know and be prepare for it when it happens to their car.

Again, great post for those who own one of these cars.

That's the online price. The Club's discount price is $66. I don't think you were signed in when viewing the site.

Ouch!
I need parts for my 2gs myself. Was in an accident where a chick pulled out in front of me at 2am giving not enough time to react and now I need a front bumper, driver side fender, and a hood. If u guys know anybody parting out one PLEASE let me know ASAP! I have a 2003 GS430 and I've been thinking about just doing after market kits but don't want fiberglass(Duraflex was one I was looking at til I saw bad reviews) I want polyurethane. I'm new here so my interactions are limited. Thanks and hate to see a GS like that. cashusclaync@yahoo.com

How often to replace?
I've had them replaced a while back, how often should I replace them? I hear a loud pop everyone once in a while when turning all the way but doesn't sound like ball joint, sounds more like tie rod

98 GS400 @ 90k miles
j stuff, you are so right. How many people on this list's lives and or family members are not worth $130. "Preventative maintenance" is always worth it's weight in Gold...

Ball joints
Quote: when is a good time to get them replaced or should they just be checked periodically? i am closing in on 50k miles
I have been through ball joints on my Toyota Tacoma (like 8). I have finally found a solid brand that is quite good. They typically were used on race cars and classic cars in the past. If you can find Proforged for anything on your Lexus or suspension buy them. I could not find them for my year model but they had other suspension parts for the future.

I have so far not had a problem with the brand PROFORGED. They are supposed to be made with a stronger type of steel and they have the best warranty I have seen. I have not had to use their warranty. I have had a pair on my vehicle for 2 years so far.
