Default Rotora Brake question

I am considering getting in on the Rotora BBK group buy, but was hoping someone could answer a couple questions for me.

1) What are the differences/advantages of getting the kit w/ the 1 piece rotors vs. the 2 piece rotors?

2) Why would I want to buy the HIGHER CERAMIC PAD GRADES vs. the H2 ceramic race pads?

My GS is my daily driver, so I am fairly concerned w/ brake dust and especially any squeaking. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Patrick

biggest advantage of having a 2 piece rotor is for better heat dis.. when the rotor gets real hot from moderate to aggresive street driving , with a 1 piece rotor , the rotor wants to expand but because its one oiece it cant so instead it tends to want to twist/warp.. whereas in a 2 piece design the rotor itself can expand independent of the rotor hat giving the stress relief whereby further reducing the possibility of warpage the second advantage is weight savings, a 2piece ususally is steel on the rotor surface but the mounting hats are aluminum

i am actually going to be getting in on this deal as well for the 6pots 2 piece for better clamping force and heat dis

The weight is pretty noticeable. This weight added with the reduced caliper weight made my car feel very nimble. I actually noticed this change in feel even before the better braking performance.

Thank you for the informative response.

Can anyone give me any input w/ regards to the difference in pads?

Thanks!

I'm running the H6 pads on my setup (front & back) for a few weeks now and I can tell you that these pads are awesome. The inital bite on them when braking is awesome. I've also noticed very little brake dust so far with NO noise at all...The step up from H2 to H6 really is noticable when braking hard. I couldn't even imagine what the H8 would feel like.

If you have the extra funds, get the H6 pads...

same here, with the new brakes, my steering felt a lot easier. 2 piece rotors are quite a bit lighter

Neo-

I'm debating that weight issue, has anyone weighed the 4 pot calipers and rotor combos?

The 4 pot calipers on the LS are tanks at roughly 20#'s. Combined with the additional weight of the 18's this makes the suspension on mine unforgiving for certain road variations.

Here are the numbers from the thread Dave posted;

stock gs brakes
font caliper - 2 pistons, 15lb
front rotor - 11.5" diameter, 18lb
rear rotor - 12" diameter, 12lb

supra tt upgrade (around a bit over $1000)
caliper - 4 pistons, 15lb
rotor - 12.7" diameter, 20lb

brembo GT upgrade (around $2800 to $3000)
caliper - 4 pistons, 7lb
rotor - 13.1"
piston area - 1.5"x2, 1.73"x2
pad area - 9.6"^2
rotor thickness - 1.26"

ap racing upgrade (around $3200 retail, there is a GB now for $2599 )
caliper - 6 pistons, 6lb
rotor - 13.5"
piston area - 1.1"x2, 1.6"x2, 1.5"x2
pad area - 11.8"^2
rotor thickness - 1.4"

And here are the numbers from StopTech (posted by Bit in a different thread):

ST-40 caliper w/o pads = ~8.25lbs
Typical 355 rotor & hat assembly = ~15.50lbs
Typical caliper bracket = ~1.0lbs
Pads = ~1.0lb each
Lines = Same as the stock line

And some numbers from Dave:

The weights I did of my old Supra TT calipers WITH pads and rotors were a bit different. I took them to a tabletop digital scale used for UPS shipments to weigh them. I'm guessing the ones you did were without pads, but for each one of these we should post with / without pads as it makes a significant weight difference.

Supra Rotor 19.65 (drilled / slotted)
Supra TT caliper with pad 16.45

Brembo 355 GT (14 inch setup)
Rotors ( 2 piece drilled only) 17.25 lbs
Brembo caliper 4pot with pad 9.9 lbs
So you make the call on the weight.

Thanks guys

With the new wheels, I figure I've put about 10#'s more on each corner. The back seems to react similar but the front is a slug. To off-set that, I'm considering replacing the heavy calipers and rotors. I'm hoping this will bring back some of the rebound characteristics with less mass there.

Time to go and read through all the BBK threads.
