Default Battery Replacement

Had to replace the Lexus-branded battery (built in February 2018) today in my wife's 2015 RX350 at 115,560 miles. The old battery had replaced the factory battery in February 2018 when the factory battery failed the Lexus dealership's test. That was a warranty replacement done about 8 months before we acquired the vehicle in late October 2018.

I used my AAA membership discount at NAPA and went with a Premium conventional wet-cell battery carrying a 3-year full replacement warranty. That's about the best you can do these days with battery prices skyrocketing and new battery longevity about half of what it was 20 years ago.

Thanks for mentioning AAA discount which includes CAA discount, didn't know NAPA has that.

NAPA BAT8435AAA built by East Penn in April 2026. I paid $212 using my AAA discount and an $18 core credit for my old battery.

Not bad. The AAA discount saved you about $8 off a normally $220 battery.

It saved me considerably more than $8. Regular current price is $220 and our sales taxes on that amount would have been an additional $16.50. So without my AAA discount I would have paid a total of $236.50.

So you have an 7.5% sale tax which means that you saved a total of about $8.60 dollars if the price was reduced to $212 with the discount plus the 7.5 sales tax for a total of $227.90 for the battery vs. $236.50 without the discount.

Not that much more saved than $8 in regards to taxes. You still will pay the sales tax with the discount or not.

Plus, you got to factor in the price of membership for AAA which you barely ever use most likely over the years that could easily have paid for the battery if the money spend for the service was saved over the years.

How often do you ever really use AAA in regards to money paid to it? So was the AAA $8.60 discount really an worth while saving at all?

I just use my road side assistant feature that is part of my auto insurance which is only about $7 a car in my plan for towing, refueling and battery jump offs that I rarely ever used to be honest.

Next time price out the batteries as only three mfgs exist that produce all car batteries found on automotive store shelves. They market themselves primarily on CCA, warranty length, network, and replacement or proration,

Walmart and Costco come to mind as leaders, cant go wrong with either.

I ended up buying a 750CCA EverStart battery for my 2015 RX350 from my local Walmart for about $150. No issue as of yet with that battery a year later after installing it.

I used this video to help decide which battery I bought to replace my old failing OEM battery in my RX350. Based off the test in the video the Walmart brand battery was the best value for performance and longevity.

carguy75,

You don't seem to be understanding my post regarding the cost. I paid $212 TOTAL for the new battery. That figure included the sales taxes.

Regarding the value of my AAA membership, there are more factors to consider other than what I save when purchasing parts from NAPA. One of those factors is their roadside assistance and towing. My wife does a significant amount of solo driving between North Carolina and Georgia to visit family. I want that AAA benefit (especially our AAA 200-mile towing range) for her safety and convenience when she is on the road by herself. And there are other AAA benefits that we utilize as well. Everyone has different preferences regarding the services they decide are worth it to them.

Fair enough.

I am just feeling that NAPA and AAA is up charging an cheaper 640CCA standard flooded battery to over $200 while making it seem like a good deal with the member "discount" that brings it down to its should be normal price. You can buy an good quality 750CCA standard flooded battery from Walmart for only $150.

At the end of of the day if you are happy with the battery cost and AAA service and discounts that is all that matters.

I have AAA Home and Car bundled insurance. Used to have USAA but moved on due to premium creep.
Also have AAA roadside coverage..
My four vehicles are a combined age of 138 years. Heck, I come home on the hook as much as behind the wheel.
