Default Steering wheel tilts intermittently

Just passed 217,000 miles on my '99 GS4 and my tilt/telescopic wheel moves in and out fine, but sometimes won't move up or down. All I get is a single click. Eventually if I hit the switch enough it will move albeit very slowly. I've seen a couple threads about taking it apart and spraying some lithium grease in the mechanism and see if that works. Anyone else had something similar happen?

The mechanism on mine intermittently would work. Only $800 to fix it. No thanks. I had lexus put it where I needed it, then disabled it. That was 10 years ago.

Same here. Dealership wanted $600! I will probably take it apart and see if there's something I can fix. If not, I will leave it

In much of the case, all you have to do is take the cover out, clean the old grease or not grease at all in that tilt/ telescopic, them put a new grease on it, move up, down a few time and start working fine after that. Good luck with this new project.

Do what Mcon said. There is a write-up on how to do it. You need to clean the old grease out and clean the metal contacts and it will work as new. Mine only does it when it gets cold. Im in Socal and it dosent get that cold so its occasional, but still bugs me.

We have beat this topic/issue into the ground. There is a very detailed write up about it.

So I took the cover off and greased any visible areas, specifically the screw that adjusts the tilt (see pic). This didn't seem to help much. Any areas I am missing?

In the 'Sticky' section above the current posts, there is a big list of FAQs and DIYs.

Thanks, doesn't look like it going to be an easy fix save for me taking the motor apart.
