I've search,and no luck. Just dead threads. Plus I'm on a crappy fone and searching is almost impossible. Does anyone have a link that has a DIY for this? I have a 92 sc300. I had move the dizzy to figure my idle problem. But i need to set it back to stock specs for smog.

 

did you pull it out and reinsert or just adjust it some up and down?
if you just moved it around, you need a timing light, and then you jumper some pins on the diagnostic connector, and set the base timing, i think its 10 degrees btdc, so move the distributor until it lines up and tighten the nut down.

if you pulled the dizzy out, then you need to set the motor to TDC, align the notches on the distributor, and stab it in. this will get you in the correct ballpark. then you do the above procedure with the timing light to get it fine tuned.

 

I just moved it side to side I didn't pull it out. I never pull out! LOL. Jk. Thanks Ali.

 

haha I should have seen that coming. yeah you are probably pretty close if you are towards the middle of the slot then, but if you can borrow a light do a double check just to make sure. there are more oldschoool ways of setting the timing, but I would recommend grabbing a cheap light off the internet and then you will always know your timing is dead on.

 

Warm up the engine to normal operating temperature.
Jump TE1 and E1 of the DLC1 (under the hood, not in the passenger compartment).
Using a timing light check the timing. It should be 10 degrees +-2 degrees BTDC at idle with the transmission in neutral and all accessories turned off.
Loosen the distributor nut and adjust the timing by turning the distributor until the timing is 10 degrees BTDC.
Tighten the nut to 19 newton meters (about 14 ft lbs).
Remove the jumper from the DLC1.

Further testing:
Check the timing ranges between 7 degrees and 19 degrees BTDC @idle with the transmission in neutral and all accessories turned off. (The manual says "@idle" but I think it should say over the operating range of RPM.) Let us know what you find. Does the timing vary between 7 and 19 degrees BTDC at idle?

Holy **** took me months to find this info went through all kinds of bs with obd and and everything. Now can you explain all these terms? I have no auto mechanic experience whatsoever but I am inclined and am just trying to get timing right because I turned the crank shaft pulled it out put it on and turned the 2 other pulleys or shafts the left n right ones numerous times. 96 ls400.

this only applies to a distributor for a sc300. there is no timing adjustment on the sc400 v8. I think you mean timing belt which is different.

 

Timing belt on a 96 ls400 4.0 litrev8 yes whatever that doesnt help me whatsoever lol how do I get the timing right. What kind of obd do I need.

 

are you trying to do a timing belt job without the manual. thats probably not a good way to start. you have to put everything back together right, there is no timing adjustment but you can easily put it back together wrong if you don't know what to do or aren't following the manual.

you do not want to turn the pulleys with the belt off, If you turned the crank pulley with the belt off you probably lost TDC and know you won't know now if you are TDC or one revolution out and will have to physically verify it (not sure how on a 400). you should probably get a manual or get someone to help you out.

 

So I have a question how do I know where my distributior timing mark is?
