Turn by hand until you can't anymore do this and you'll never have a problem. Cartridge style filters have a torque spec (20 lb-ft) I've never seen one for a canister.
Last time I tried to use hand to turn it 3/4 of turn as shown in picture but I remember I wasn't able to turn it 3/4 turn. It was soooo hard. I just made sure it was tight enough. That's why I thought I use torque this time. I can use oil filter cap that has a place for socket wrench and that way I can easily turn it 3/4 turn.
I’ve used the 3/4 turn after contact and have never had a leak or hard removal when replaced for an oil change. Really a “rule of thumb” for all canister oil filters.
