Default Double DIN Unit in NAV location?

Has anyone tried tinkering with housing a double DIN head unit where the NAV screen is?

Not sure if this has been done before...

if you mean standard 2 din ( not slim) unit, no it can't be used.

Thanks for the advise.

I figured it would be a tight fit.

The idea was to use the Nav location to house AudioControl's in-dash Epicenter and THREE.2 crossover which have 1/2 DIN dimensions.

I guess I will need to get creative to install these in another location.

There are a few threads with NAV replacements. Hopefully one of them will have approximate dimensions recorded in the thread.

no it won’t fit. The size behind the navigation screen is narrow and short

Check out SC 430mods. He is out of stock now, but this is a plug and play solution that fits in the nav housing

Yeah I had already checked this option out previously and eventhough that solution puts a full radio in the NAV opening what I am trying to accomplish is to use that space to accommodate 1/2 DIN items such as an AudioControl in dash crossover and probably swap out my current AudioControl Epicenter to the in dash version.

Basically I am looking to accomplish the following:

I don't know the depth of the unit you are thinking about, but there is definitely limited depth. You will either have to comb through the Android in Nav screen threads for a good visual estimate of space available or take it out and check specific depth at whatever height is needed. And the depth available will depend on if you want to keep a working door.

I know it may be a tough one to pull off but I am doing some research about the NAV internal dimensions to see if these can be fitted or not.

As for the door I would like to keep it functional.

I guess I will keep this thread posted as I go...

To keep the door functional:

You will have to keep at least some of the metal cage as that has the door tracks.

There is a thread (sorry to OP, can't remember who) wherein the member used extended wiring and relocated the door control board to the glove compartment. This will yield the most space in the area.

Pretty sure all the Android units that replace NAV are Double-DIN in height, but only about 2-inches in depth.

Maybe I missed it, but I think you are exploring new ground if you have a standard DIN depth.

If there isn't room, maybe contact Audio Control and see if they have a remote-control face plate so you could mount the guts in an area with more space.

Good luck, hope it works out for you - and if it does, please post back about max dimensions. I had mine apart to install a 7-inch monitor in that spot, but never thought to document the available space.

Thanks for the advise. Yes this is new ground for exploration as it's never been done before I think. Being an Engineer myself I am pretty sure I can figure something out either by building a custom frame and integrating the OEM functionality.

I have already found some images showing the empty housing. I would have to scale the image to get some type of dimensions. Would like to do this before I pull my system out having at least some sort of idea what I am working with.

I will try to keep this thread updated for the greater community as I figure this thing out.

Here's a pic with everything removed.

I think I was a little too ambitious with the nav screen project. I'm on my fourth version of the screen surround at present. An engineer/upholstery expert with the requisite skills might be able to fabricate a decent solution using a wide screen tablet. I don't use it for audio but having access to all Apple apps and the OBD info over bluetooth is nice to have onboard.

Awesome pic!

Understanding that the a/c vents are on the side the opening will definitely work as its a square/rectangular opening.

This give me a more visible interior area.

It now just a matter of customizing the NAV mechanical box and retrofit it with custom bracket and interior guts to hold the 1/2 units.
