Default Oil changes, etc.

Hi all

Some 5,500 miles ago I bought my '07 SC at which time they did an oil change, resetting the maintenance required light at the same time.

The maintenance light is flashing for a brief time time after startup, so I'm assuming it's time for an oil change.

This brings up a number of questions:
  1. What is typically the mileage between indicated oil changes? 5,500 miles seems a bit early, but what do I know?
  2. Has anyone ever mounted a Fumato valve to their SC? I've got them on a couple of other cars and like them a lot.
  3. Where's the best place to buy oil filters?
  4. I did a quick pretrial through the "maintenance" section in the onboard navigation system. It's it me, or is this perfectly useless?
Thank you!

Oil change interval reminder for Toyota vehicles is set default at 5000 miles. I don’t think you can alter this.

I'm NOT an oil expert.

Factory recommends every 5K

I prefer OEM filters. Oil filters cans be (typically) sourced cheaper from a Toyota Dealer - part number 90915-20004

Haven't put a Fumoto valve on my SC but have an extra one that may go on at next oil change. Need to check how low it will extend.

I change my oil between 4K-5k miles and use synthetic
oil filters are Toyota purchased online, usually from Amazon, Rockauto or eBay. Will look for the best deal on 8+ Filters…then only need to purchase every few years.

I buy mine at my local Toyota dealer. They cost me $6.50 which is cheaper than an aftermarket one at an autoparts store

I also buy my oil in 5 quart jugs when Mobile1 has a rebate. You used to be able to get 5 quarts of full synthetic from walmart for $25 (before rebate), but now with inflation going crazy, I have no idea how much it is now

Thanks all.

Appreciate the feedback.

5k seems fairly frequent. My Honda's have some sort of algorithm, I guess based upon usage and mileage and it was typically between 7,000 and 10,000 miles. Oh well.

I need to look under the car to see if a Fumato valve would be the lowest point. That would be sub-optimal.

I'll order a bunch of filters online and a filter wrench if I don't have one.

cheers

Went to buy oil filters at Toyota Parts Now and there was an $18 shipping fee on top of the $3.77 per filter for a quantity of 8.

I'll check a local dealer. If they can beat the $6.02 net price, I'll go that route....

Cheers

Looks like u can buy them for $6 off amazon
Amazon Amazon

But you may want to pay a little more for the Oil Plug gaskets & filters combined
Amazon Amazon

Since it would take me several years to use 5 of them, I just buy them from the dealer as I need them

If you purchase 10, it will lower the price to $4.73 a filter.
I made this purchase in 2018 for $4.40 a filter and still have two left.

The upside of the Fumoto valve is apparent, but consider the cons: the threaded portion that goes into the pan prevents complete draining; the valve typically hangs lower than the rest of the engine, which makes it prone to being hit by road hazards; an enemy could drain out your oil with minimal time and effort (not that I'm paranoid or anything); it's one more part that can malfunction vs the drain bolt. Overall, the benefits don't outweigh the risks.

The latest/greatest deal in synthetic oil is Costco's Kirkland brand. It was tested by Project Farm and performed admirably. Ten quarts costs $39; comes in a case of two, five-quart jugs. You gotta love the huge jugs!

Wow,

Got the oil changed. I don't think I'm going to worry about the Fumato valve.

The filter is a pain in the ear to get to. The drain plug is a piece of cake in comparison.

To get to the filter, you have to remove at least one bottom panel. I took both bottom and side off, but might try just the bottom next time

Yikes.

Any suggestions on how to avoid getting oil all over? I only marginally succeeded this time.

I am the 3rd owner of my SC430. One of the previous owners (or a Dealer or repair shop) actually cut a section of the plastic lower engine panel out to provide oil filter access. While I probably wouldn't have done that, it does make things pretty easy.
