So I bought a one owner 2002 SC with 75K miles last month and got the timing belt done and 4 new tires installed so I felt OK to drive it and have been doing so for a week now. I thought I had found a great place to sit my phone while driving and streaming music .... that little rectangular spot at the base of the speedometer cavity is a perfect fit for my iPhone. I've been putting my phone in that rectangular spot face down so there is no distracted driving. Seemed like a pretty sweet spot to sit my phone because it didn't move around at all while I was enjoying driving the car. Today it bit me in the a$$ when I turned in to a parking spot at the grocery store and turned the key off. One spoke of the steering wheel was positioned directly in front of the speedometer when I switched the ignition off. As the steering column automatically raised and retracted, the spoke of the steering wheel compressed my phone into the lens of the speedometer and BANG - the lens broke while I was unbuckling my seat belt. Tomorrow I'll be searching the forum to see how formidable a job pulling the instrument cluster is so that maybe I won't have to keep looking at that broken lens every time I get behind the wheel
Ohhh noo! Sorry that happened. But do hope you enjoy your sweet ride regardless.
I remember once picking up a wiper arm of my Audi (to clean the windshield. Had removed the wiper blade to replace). Accidentally dropped the arm down and BAM! Cracked windshield. D'OH! Stuff happens. Do let us know what you find out.
DJ, you are not alone. Someone at the club made the same mistake few year back, crushing the phone to the speedometer when it retracted. I forgot who and if he’s still an active member.
It not too hard to remove the instrument cluster. I've done it several times, make sure the steering wheel is positioned all the way down and out from the panel.
Having learned about car-part.com on here recently, I found a wrecked 2005 SC 430 nearby and was able to go and pull the cluster from it today. Had to buy the whole unit as they wouldn't sell me just the lens, so for $70 and my labor I'm back to where I was day before yesterday . If you're reading this and you need something for your car, I might be able to help you out as the salvage yard isn't too far off the beaten path for me. The wreck is silver with tan interior and light maple wood trim. The front end and passenger side of the car are pretty heavily damaged. Passenger window is broken out and weather is getting in. Car has been there less than 1 week so it's not too bad inside yet. PM me if there are specifics you're looking for and I can go back and have a look and get some photos for you.
DJM: Wow...this was a freak accident! Luckily, I would have never considered putting my phone in this spot. Not because I'm aware of a pitfall such as this, I'm just not as resourceful as you! Thanks for sharing with this CL forum so we can all learn from your mistake.
You lucked out in finding such as an inexpensive replacement so close to home. The gods are smiling on you!
In Australia and I am finding it difficult to find a distributor for the part 83138G that you have so kindly put up on the site.
I have just purchased an SC430 as the second in my new life passion, my Naughty's Club. Rules, any car that I desired from the 2000's that was over $150k new (here in Oz), is eligible to join the family.
The first in the "line up" (of 2) is a 2003 Cayenne S 4.5lt with 213,000 (133,000 mile) on the clock, serviced meticulously by Porsche & never missed a service it's entire life, so with the new interior underway, I'm looking forward to years of part time motoring with her, whilst spending considerable more time admiring and washing than driving.
And now to the new love of my life the SC. I would love if you could share the website where you obtained the drawings as there is a similar site for the Porsche which contains all the part numbers. I am into the work on her now with the wheels off and kerb rash being taken care of with the likelihood of a very wrap in the same original color to happen next.
Interior needs to be completely redone and is booked in after the Cayenne. Also looking to replace the suspension to soften the ride for our crappy roads here in the country areas.
If you would also share a suppler that I could contact that might be able to ship to Australia i would also greatly appreciate it.
