Default 2002 SC TPMS Techstream Question

BGW70

I know you have an 02 that you use Techstream on. A friend wants me to reset his TPMS's on his 02. The cable I have and use on my 06 works great. I believe on his 02 like on my sons 05 that cable will throw the VSC/VSC Light on code of which can be fixed with the paper clip fix (The OBDII adaptor I made for my sons 05 to reset not using the paper clip in 4 and 14 is in VA) Will using my cable on his 02 have any other ill effects?

It should not have any other ill effects, just throwing the VSC light code. Mine doesn't with my 2002.

Thanks Harold. The question was OBE'ed yesterday afternoon when I called the guy and told him I was just not comfortable plugging my cable into his 02. If I jack up my car or my son's that one thing but jacking up someone else's car just because I thought I knew more than i do would not set well we me.

Yeah, sorry for the latency of the response but I've been slammed at work and home and haven't monitored the forum in the last couple of days. If you make the adapter cable for your unit, there shouldn't be any issues at all. Without it, the light should be the only issue. However, with all that said, I think that you took the right approach, short of having an adapter cable or going the route of the paper clip reset. (I didn't want to trust my hands being steady and choosing the proper pins to do the paper clip reset, so that was one reason for building the adapter and / or the "reset tool".)

That is why I built the reset tool for my son's 05 so we did not need to do the paper clip reset. However the reset tool is in Richmond VA now. Just to make sure I understand the reset tool correctly. There is no cable running back to a USB end which plugs into the computer? All I did was take a new OBDII end and solider a jumper between 4 and 14 and then close it back up. So I can use my cable and reset or read what ever I want knowing I will trip the VSC/VSC lights on code. Then I just unplug my cable and plug in the reset adaptor into the OBDII and turn the Key on without starting the engine and the light should go out. Am I correct in my thinking?

Did you build another reset cable? Use it as you did before as you’ve tripped the VSC light .

So I'm not sure exactly what you're asking, so I'll just put it this way:
  • If all you want is a reset tool, you can build one like BGW did early on in that thread. It is only the OBDII connector with the two pins shorted together. This connector is a standalone tool, it doesn't hook up to anything other than the OBDII connector in your car. It will not prevent anything, it will only clear the code.
  • If you want to be able to prevent the code from showing up (essentially prevent the error condition from occurring), you'll need to build the adapter tool that connects between the Techstream cable and the OBDII connector in your car. This adapter will prevent the CAN bus that is in the Techstream from creating an error. But this adapter will not clear an error that exists.
  • Now you can build an adapter cable that will be both preventative and restorative. It will just require that the switch mentioned in the instruction thread be added between the two pins. When you need to clear a code, you just turn the switch on and then go through the process of code clearing.
Does that answer your question?

Yes I went with the 1st option listed. Mine is intended to just clear the code.
