Default question about timing chain service

Can any one confirm whether or not timing chain has to be replaced based on milages or on years? I received conflicting recommendation and in dire need of some REAL answer. Thank you in advance.

IMHO, one is just as important as the other: high mileage is obvious for change BUT underuse or low mileage could be just as hard on components with time. If ALL fluids are changed regularly (oil , rad) , time might not be such a big issue as mileage but sometimes cars just sitting is worse than daily driven. I would think you are in the low mileage hence the question because mileage is somewhat easier to understand but if you're having doubts i would say change it when you can. The last thing you would want is for the belt to go and be kicking yourself in the a$$ because you decided to wait a little longer.

To quote Clint:“You've gotta ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya, punk?"
And no i am not referring to you as punk. I just thought the quote would seem incomplete without it.

thank you for your input. I recently test drove a 06 SC430 with 53K and was told that the timing belt should be replaced as well as alternator, starter, drive belt, and maybe AC compressor. The SC430 was barely driven for close to 2 years and wondering the preventive cost.

Grab it. Two years of inactivity is nothing to these engines. Unless you're doing those component swaps yourself, it won't be cheap.

SC430's have timing belts not chains.
Big difference in the type of service you will need.

"SC430 2001-2010 has a timing belt and replacement interval recommended by Lexus is 90K miles or 7 years. In practice most folks who are under mileage tend to go longer than 7 years"

You'll find a lot of information on the timing belt or timing belt kit if you do a search in this forum. For an '06 SC, the timing belt should be changed at either 9 years or 90,000 miles. I would recommend getting the pulleys, water pump, etc., and everything else that's included in a timing belt kit at the same time as the timing belt. It's an interference engine, hence the reason it's wise preventative maintenance. As for the other items, I would change out the drive belt, but would not replace the alternator, starter, or AC compressor until needed.

I agree with 6'1. I would do the timing belt, but would hold off on the other things.

Can I ask who told you those things needed to be changed, was it the previous owner or a pre-purchase inspection?

Lexus makes a quality product and there are lots of cars with over 100K miles that have never had their starters, compressors or alternators changed.

If a mechanic recommended that you do it, I might get a second opinion before I made a move.

Timing belt change intervals are based on either time or miles, whichever comes first. I've changed 4 Toyota timing belts myself, and I have yet to see one that looked at all worn (perhaps had invisible wear). One was 35K/2yrs past due and yet looked like new. That said, it's always a crap shoot as any kind of leak, defect or abuse can shorten a belt's life. A broken belt will destroy an SC430 engine, so err on the side of caution.

Another word of caution...Use a reputable shop that will use the highest quality parts available. Personally, I prefer true OEM parts for any Toyota timing belt job.
