Default Shifter issues

My sc430 2003 shifter is hard to go from park to drive. I have purchased a used shifter (new one no longer being manufactured)
mechanic says better but not really perfect. Is there any one that will remanufactured old ones? Are is there a repair that can be done? My mechanic is charging me $250 for replacing old one, is that a fair price? I purchased old one , out of pocket!

I agree with GMan that the shifter is a relatively straightforward piece of equipment and it seems weird it would go bad.

Can you give us more information on why you think yours is bad? Also, what did your mechanic not like about the part you bought?
