Oversized Oil Filter
This information is buried somewhere in the archives, but I wanted to update it since I cross referenced old info to figure this out.
There is a pretty big oversized oil filter that fits our cars:
FRAM XG3600
I forget the exact difference, but I believe the stock is 3.5" or something like that and this one is 5.1" or thereabouts. Put it this way, you'll need almost the full 6 quarts now to do an oil change, that's how much bigger it is.
Before you cringe at a fram filter, I too used to avoid fram like the plague but the general consensus on the http://bobistheoilguy.com forum (the holy grail of oil forums) is that this is one of the best filters currently on the market (they dissect them over there if you want more details) and it's pretty cheap. They still recommend avoiding most of the other models, but they give high praise to the ultraguard line.
You can always use this part number to cross-reference to whatever brand you prefer.
I currently have it on my vehicle (no fitment issues), and I'm using Mobil 1 Extended Performance, High Mileage formula. In my dreams I'm giving Matt Farrah a run for his money in his million mile 1UZ, lol.

I plan on doing oil changes every 7500, not sure exactly what qualifies as OCI these days. I used to do every 5k, but it seems like with the advancements in oils these days, there isn't a good reason to do them so frequently. I think the oil/filter is rated to at least 15k, but I'm not that trusting, lol.
I'm not sure I follow you on this. Larger oil capacity and more filter surface area would be a value added.
Do you have any data on filters changing oil pressure? I've never heard of that. If anything, wouldn't more filter surface area mean it would be more free flowing (if it did in fact make any difference at all, which I'm not sure of)?
here is an interesting thread on this topic:

it sounds like the type of filter media has more of an impact on pressure than changing the size slightly, neither of which seem to be a big deal.

My previous experience on my LS, same motor, 7500 is about as far as I would go due to carbon building up in the oil and the engine. I was doing 10k but I started to notice a little bit of valve clatter on cold starts. Oil itself was fine but too dirty. I also used an oversized filter in the past but personally did not see really any benefits. The anti drain back valve is very important in a filter as it prevents the pump from having to fill the filter with oil first before it hits the rest of the engine. Ever more so with an oversized filter. Listen for valve clatter on cold starts and if you notice it I would switch back to a stock size. The valve noise for a few seconds after the car has been sitting overnight. Remember, as much as 90% of engine wear happens on cold starts. You want that oil circulation as fast as possible.
I am a big fan of MMO. It's no miracle product but works very well when used properly. Lots of good info on BTOG forums as well. I use it in every tank of gas plus a good 1/2 quart 500 miles before my oil change.
7500 OCI is no problem with a good synthetic. PUP and M1 EP are my favorite oils. Other good oils out there too.

I'll do it every 5k miles with synthetic oil or at least 1/year whichever come first. I bought a whole case of OEM filter so I have plenty to go through.

I've had 2 GS, one LS400 and one LS430. Always used Amsoil Signature with one of their synthetic filters. Both can go you to 25k miles. These vehicles had combined mileage of 1 million miles.
I typically went 15k. Oil analysis always came back fine with more life still left.
Using the same set up on my SC430 with zero long term worries.

I agree with mandyfig and would not go outside of OEM specs on the oil filter. The hyperlink below provides what seems to be fair assessment on the topic:

Great info!
So the filter I'm using has a bypass valve setting of 12psi:

I looked up one of the fram filters that is made for our car which is also 12psi:

Other than matching the bypass valve pressure, there wasn't any other reason not to use a larger filter in that article. (aside from warranty issues which are a non-issue since I have no warranty).
If you don't feel comfortable going outside of oem spec, then by all means, I'm sure the stock filter is plenty capable (it seems like everything they designed on this car was done well). I've just always used oversized filters on all my vehicles (the Miata guys recommend it since a lot of them track/auto-x their cars). I always liked the warm fuzzy feeling from going a little overboard on preventative maintenance since I tend to keep my cars for a long time and many miles.
There was an old thread on this topic somewhere which got me started (don't have the link handy), so I just wanted to update it with what I'm doing. The bypass valve info is really good, I did not know that before, I'm going to double check that spec on my other vehicles.
