Default Jis screws

Are jis screws common knowledge? I thought it was. What leads me to asking is prompted by a call from my nephew yesterday. He was having trouble with a rotor screw. I asked him if he was using a Phillips head or a jis screwdriver. To my surprise he had no idea there was such a thing as jis. ( he's only 18) I wasn`t surprised he didn`t have a jis screwdriver of his own, but I thought he knew about them. Japanese cars for years haven`t had Phillips head screws in them. They`ve all been jis. Even U.S. auto manufacturers use them anymore. Using a Phillips head screwdriver in a jis head screw makes for a great chance of stripping the screw out.

It’s not just the Japanese Industrial Standard or JIS screw, there are many variants. Here is an article with explanations and pictures too. https://www.instructables.com/id/Whe...ot-a-Phillips/

And, of course, the ubiquitous amazon link (one of many sources) to the tool itself

I have heard of a JIS screwdriver. The USAF taught me the proper tool names many moons ago. No one ever mentioned JIS...I had to google it.
here is a nice picture of the difference.
i have always called them number 0, 1, 2, 3 Phillips screwdriver.

These are the words describing the Amazon JIS screw driver...

JIS Screwdriver Set JISPH1 PH2 PH3 4pc Set for Japanese Standard Screws

they use JISPH1, so this would mean Japanese Industrial Standard Phillips Head 1, this would imply they are the same...

The Phillips head never sits right in a jis. Plus they cam out of a jis head really easy. so you have to apply a lot of inward force To keep if from doing so. When trying to use a Phillips head in a jis you end up using a size to big because the tip will hit the bottom before it's completely seated with the right size.

Vessel is the brand jis screwdrivers i prefer . They are just nice quality. I have a set of hozan, but they aren't very good.

Advantages and Disadvantages of JIS

Most people and companies outside of Japan have absolutely no idea what they are. With the similarity in appearance to the Frearson and the Phillips the screws are often damaged in removing and installing with the wrong tools. JIS tends not to camout like Philips. The JIS driver can be used on Phillips quite easily but not reciprically. Drivers are not easily available in North America, try your local RC Airplane hobby shop. Most RC Helicopters use JIS screws to mount the propeller. JIS-spec cross-head screws are generally marked with a single raised dot or an "X". JIS always fit Phillip fasteners, but because of slight design differences, Phillips drivers may not fit JIS fasteners. (unless the tip is ground down a bit).

In fact, sometimes I've used the jis in Phillips head screws, because I've gotten a better bite. I've found this mainly in small screws.

the thing is Japanese automakers have been using them exclusively for many years. Now even American automakers are using them exclusively.

Great explanation here, and doesn't just apply to motorcycles. It applies to the sc430 and any other Japanese car. Plus like I said other manufacturers have gone to it too.

Thanks Coleroad. I had never heard of JIS Screwdrivers until this post and I have been working on cars for years.

Now if only Harbor Freight would give away free GIS four way screwdrivers.

This is news to me also. I guess that I'm going to have to do a search and find me a set of drivers.
