OK. So I took apart most of trunk. I found a problem. What u suggested. It's loose
So much going it tighten it up. Also how to I remove the emergency trunk release latch so I can get to remove the carpet on the left.
Ok
I think I found the source of the problem. The cable behind the latch was loose. Question is how do I tighten the cable to give enough slack to attach it.
There are 54 pages of instructions on the roof mechanism, way too much to try to convey here. This is well worth $15 for a two day subscription to TIS https://techinfo.toyota.com/techInfo...l=ti_home_page. Where you can get the info and download everything you need.
regarding the emergency release handle the are four clips at 12,3,6 &9 positions.
Congratulations on finding your problem. You just saved $3500.
I would not adjust the barrel, until you get the cable in place.
BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING, TAKE A PICTURE OF HOW THE CABLE GOES INTO THE PIVOT. THIS IS CRUCIAL.
If you pull on the cable, there should be some slack, since the pivot should move. If there is no slack, then see if you can move the pivot by hand and have a helper hold it open while you attach the cable.
If you don't have a helper, disconnect the cable from the pivot, attach the hinge end and then rehook up the pivot side. (since the pivot can move)
Make sure you route the cable the same way as you see in your picture
After looking at your pivot picture, I am not sure the cables are hooked up correctly. I think the cable should wrap around the other way.
This is the problem I had with my convertible top, which is why I know so much about this junk.
Take out the other side and see if the cable is wrapped differently. If you don't get the right wrap direction, then the cable bends your pivot, or the hinge side cable hooks and then you end up buying a new hinge.

The Other cable came off the hinge too. but how do I access it. I can't remove the emergency trunk lever to remove the carpet. Do I remove the 10mm bolt and take the lever with the whole carpet out together? . also can use metal zip ties or something of sorts to keep the bracket from opening up again. it seems weak.
Hey Bob, Does the manual say anything about how the wires go into the pivot? In post 50 you gave us a picture, but I remember it as being more complex than that. If you do it wrong, there is not enough torque to pull the latches.
I could be wrong though, I just recall it was trickier than I expected
I haven't had time, but will get back to it within a few days. Will update.
Was dealing with another problem. When I hit bumps/potholes my steering wheel shakes erratically. Looked at suspension/end links but didn't see any issue other than lower control arm bushing torn. Any suggestions on that? Maybe that should be in a new thread... 😁
