Side Mirrors
#2
I had to get new ones - mine would go side to side but not up and down because the motor was apparently burned out. I got some used on eBay and had them installed - they were pretty scraped up but at least they work now. Getting them painted next month...

No, not really. More likely its the motor. There are two motors, one for up and down and the other left and right. There are a few threads on this forum on how to replace motors. You can find a side mirror on ebay (doesn't matter which side) and swap them out. It should cost around $60 on ebay, but the procedure is very challenging. Or you can go to the dealer for $700 or indie for $350.

It can also be the gearing, since the gears are made of plastic. They are known for wearing out. But there is a good chance that it is the motors. Do you hear the motors running and just no movement or just silence?

The mirrors are a very weak spot in this car. The dealership mechanic told me that the design is complete crap.

Take my advice, guys, turn off the auto till function (the mirrors will till down when gear in Reverse), it saves the gears in the mirrors.

Mirror motors are problematic but sometimes it may just be corrosion on the 4 way mirror control switch inside the car. Pull the switch and use a pencil erasure or similar material to clean metal contact surfaces on the switch control. These switches develop some minor internal corrosion and can then intermittently stop operating in some directions.

My Passenger's side Up/Down stopped working. I opened it up, did some clean-up and swapped the motors. Now it's all working. Not sure what I did! The Up/down motor gets more wear due to auto-tilt, so it's good to swap with the Left/Right motor after a while.

Though the steps are well documented the procedure is very difficult to execute, especially without any damage or scratches. The mirror assembly basically consists of two parts the mirror and its housing. Believe it or not the mirror costs more than its whole housing. So if you break the mirror during its removal it may end up costing you more than replacing the housing. If you must do it make sure to grab the mirror as close to the four tabs holding it as possible. If you try to ply it open at its far side you risk breaking it.
In fact, my suggestion is simply not to open the assembly. You can solve the problem either by adjusting the up/down angle manually or having a competent mechanic replace the housing.
