Extended Warranty
Hi everyone- just wondering who you are going with for aftermarket extended warranty in the US? I think we discussed a few times about the subject but I don't recall seeing it lately. Mine just expired and I am considering getting a new one depending on the cost.
Mine also just expired but the contract for all the ones I found does not cover the car if you have after-market wheels and tires and of course custom headers and exhaust are out. So I'll just plan to pay for any needed repairs - part of the price for mods.
When my wife's 2003 SC430 ran out of the Lexus extended warranty, we went with Mercury Insurance Co. for another service warranty. For the no deductible, all coverage plan we paid about $1,700 for another 2 years of total coverage. Since Mercury has had my car insurance for many years I feel confident that they'll stand behind this service contract.
We got our SC in May last year, this is our third Lexus. The first two we purchased new and had little or no warranty problems. Are any of you having problems that exceed the yearly cost of the extended warranties, or are you just purchasing for piece of mind?
when I purchased my car, shortly after the GPS and the rear trunk struts were replaced under warranty. Those exceeded the cost of the warranty by a few hundred. Nothing since then. These cars seem reliable its more of a peace of mind thing.
My dealer lets you pay the extended warranty over 12 months but their mark up sucks.

In the first year of my ownership I need the behicle hight sensors replaced under warranty. The dealer price for parts and labor came to about $1800; the 3yr warranty from GM was about $3500. The parts would have cost me about half the dealers price purchasing at Sewell and it's a straight forward DIY. I replaced the trunk struts myself purchasing at Lift Depot. No other issues so the warrany was more costly than the repairs. For me it's peace of mind but most club members have reported very few problems. Make sure you follow the maintenance plan and use age if you dont have enough mileage - especially timing belt and water pump etc. also monitor your radiator which seems can develop a crack and cause overheating. With the right care you shouldn't have a large problem.
My two cents worth - on the luxury cars i've owned, and I've had a few, I've always had extended warranties. I bought my SC430 as CPO and got an extended warranty which runs out 9/4/2016. I wouldn't have a car of this caliber without a warranty because I am not handy enough to do it myself, nor rich enough to afford the out of pocket expense some things can cost.
I will love my car for 2 more years and then might part with her and fall in love with something else. Or maybe not. This is absolutely, hands down, my favorite car in the long list of cars I've owned (so far).

You also have to consider that at the end of the day working on these cars is no different than working on a Toyota and reliable an inexpensive mechanics are available. The cost of dealer repairs make these cars seem un-affordable.
