Getting my new 2004 from MD to NC
Purchasing a silver 04 from a individual in Maryland. What is the best way to get this car back to NC to properly register the car. I'll have notorized title, bill of sale, but no tags.
At dealerships, you get temp tags for this reason. How do you do this for a private sale?
I'm sure some members have bought there vehicles out of state. How did you get them home?

If you put it on a trailer or have it professionally transported, obviously you do not need tags on the car.
MD to NC is a nice drive (I've driven DC to Raleigh several times), so you will need tags of some sort.
The adventuresome would, as has been mentioned here before, just take the tags off his present car and use those, as the risk of problems is very small and your excuse (I didn't know what the rules were) is fairly common and benign (as opposed to "these were the plates that were on the car when I stole it").
Since state laws and procedures for these things vary, why ask us? Call your local DMV registrar and ask (the call is free) what the procedure is for driving back to NC a car purchased in a foreign state. The answer might not be so bad, and you can be (pretty) sure it's accurate.

Call either the DMV in Maryland or a AAA office in Maryland to find out if their 30 temporary registration can be used to transport a vehicle out of state.
I have used this option in Pennsylvania to move purchased cars to other states. After purchasing a vehicle from a private party we stopped into a AAA office to have the sales contract and title transfer notarized and a 30 day temporary plate issued to transport the vehicle.

I was unaware of the AAA option (above), but if it is available and easily followed it sounds like a good way to go. If not, try what I have done: Your state probably has a registration grace period. Print the date of the end of the grace period on a piece of cardboard cut to the size of a plate and mount it where the plate should be. Copy the grace period info (obtained on-line) and carry it and proof of purchase with you on the trip. I've done this twice and wasn't stopped either time (I was once passed by an officer who ignored/didn't see me). As has been often said, one is usually better off begging forgiveness than asking permission . . . . . . . .

Depending on the regulations in MD and NC, AAA may or may not be able to help. AAA is a private organization and will only have authority to issue a license only if allowed by the state laws and duly implemented. Some AAA offices are deputized to issue plates, etc, as deputy registrars. Others can only issue you a map, although you might get instructions and suggestions on how to get the proper paperwork from AAA if an informed person happens to pick up the phone when you call. But don't count on that. Call the DMV first to see what they say.

It's too late I know for you, but please discourage anyone else from bringing them into the state. Dang it if there aren't at least a dozen around me in Raleigh. I keep expecting to see one with a Papa John's sign taped to rear headrest.
