Default Removing the front bumper?

So I received all my HIDs and I'm ready to change my DRLs and fogs. I have read the FAQs in the other thread but there seems to be conflicting methods on how to get into the headlight/fogs. One thread says removing the air box. Another says remove the bumper. I downloaded several exploded views for the front bumper area but I just wanted to make sure before I start taking stuff apart tomorrow.

From what I understand, to get to my DRLs and fogs, the best way to go about it would be to take my front bumper off, correct? I should be able to partially have it off because of the headlight washers and such. As I recall, my first course of action is to remove the underlining from the bottom and wheel well. Will I need my car up on jack stands for this job?

After trying to change my headlight bulbs for ten minutes, I realized there was no way in hell I could fit my hands into the tiny spaces to change them without removing the bumper. And dropping the bumper isn't a simple one person job. So I decided my best course of action was to pay Toyota to replace them for me. They charge much less than Lexus.

Wait...seriously? I read in a few threads that the front bumper comes off pretty easily. I thought it was just a matter of knowing where the screws and nuts are?

I've never attempted it. But that's not the impression I got from people who have. I'm guessing it wouldn't be too bad as long as you have two people. But I don't think it's a simple one person job.

I recently removed my front bumper a couple of times to replace the fog lights with DRL's and it was far easier than I expected.

If you take your time and put a blanket on the floor in front of the car it is a one person job.

Take off the wheel arch trims, about four or five self tappers.
Pull the fender liner back and undo the 10mm bolt that holds the bumber to the fender each side.
The most difficult part is where the bumper meets the fenders, there is a clip/hook affair that is tricky to separate. You have to lift the bumber and tug it, only way I can explain it really. Do not try and lever it with a screw driver as I did and chip the paint..............

Take off the grill, three 10mm bolts and slide it forward from its clips(you may have to help them from inside the engine compartment).
Remove the bumper clips either side of the grill and undo about eight 10mm screws underneath. It is obvious which ones.
As you take the bumper off you will find is easier to disconnect the pipe from the washer tank, but put a container below because it will drain.
There should be enough slack in the fog light cables if you lay it close to the car and disconnect them afterwards. (can't remember whether I did or didn't!!)

Hope this helps.

Best regards
Steve

Thanks! That doesn't sound too hard. Did you have to jack up the front for anything, or is it fine having the car on the ground?

You will certainly want to jack the car up, in fact it is easier if it is on stands so the jack handle is not in the way.
Much more clearance with the wheel turned inwards each side to get to the fender liner and bolts.
When you bend the fender liner inwards, it feels like it will break (you have to be quite firm with it), but it is fine as it is very flexible. You may find it a little easier if you remove one 10mm screw about half way up the liner. I found it hard to move the liner originally until Talwang posted a picture showing me how easy it was.

I forgot to say that you also want to remove the wheel arch trims, four or five small self tappers. ammended my first post.

Best regards
Steve

Darn. I was hoping you wouldn't say that. I guess that gives me an excuse to buy a real jack now .

I dropped the front bumper for the LED and HID upgrade as well for changing the fog bulbs. I had to drop it to install the crear corner markers and to upgrade the swaybar. The first time took a lot longer but now I can get it off in about 15 min. I didn't jack it up for the fogs and HIDs but it would make it easier. Make sure you have good visibility inside the fog bulb socket - the fog bulb is held in with a spring wire that is hard to get back in place without practice. I still need to look ...

Good luck

Yeah, sounds like the general consensus would be to drop the bumper to make it easier to reach & see. I'll be heading to Costco tomorrow to pick up a jack, then I can start on it .

I don't see a write up or a step by step, so maybe i'll take pictures along the way, and do one for future DIYers .
