Default 2007 - steering wheel volume control issues

Strangely, after my battery died and the car was jump-started the volume control on the steering wheel is not working correctly. When I press the volume up switch, the sound actually decreases, and the volume down button does not function. The manual volume control **** on the radio works fine. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Have you tried setting the volume at a comfortable level with the radio volume control ****. The press and hold the steering wheel "set" button until you hear a beep. Then try the up and down buttons on the steering wheel control switch.

If the steering wheel buttons stop working, or work intermittently, the most-likely cause is the "spiral cable". This is the cable that runs down the center of the steering column. The wires for the airbag, horn, and steering wheel controls all run through this cable.

Does seem like an odd coincidence that you started having problems right after a jump-start, though.

I am having the same problem with my 2005. The up controller does nothing and the down control acts like the set by automatically dropping the volume. I have tried unhooking the battery and grounding out the car to reset the computer, but no luck. Did you every figure out what was wrong with yours?

Default Steering wheel Volume Controls

I am having the exact same problem with my 2005 SC430. I can press the up and down volume controls together and it raises the volume but the up button alone does nothing.. Any help would be appreciated.

There is a service bulletin addressing this issue. There is a process to reset the volume controls. Once the control was reset it worked again. No problems since. The dealership should have it. There was no charge for me when I went.

I tryed everything here with no success. Unfortunately the car is out of warranty and the dealer won't touch it without charging for a service call and doesn't want to tell me anything to try on my own.

This applies only to 2004-2008 SC430 with NAV (I thought all had NAV, but that is was the bulletin says)

1. Insert the key in the ignition and turn it on to the ACC position. Within 30 seconds perform steps 2 and 3.

2. Press and hold the audio MODE switch for more the 10 seconds.

3. After releasing the MODE switch, press the channel up switch 3 times and then the channel down switch 3 times within 5 seconds. NOTE: Make sure you are pressing the channel buttons and NOT the volume buttons.

4. Turn the ignition switch to ON then to the OFF position.

5. Confirm proper operation of the steering wheel controls

Not only did the local Toyota dealer not charge me, but they even printed out the service bulletin and gave me a copy in case I had the problem again. This worked for me. Let me know if this fixes yours.

in step one the word Withing is that meant to be waiting or within

Wow great tidbit of info there on the procedure. I edited the post, corrected the typo for clarity.

I would think that this procedure will work in all cars with the NAV system, since a majority of the SC430s were built with the NAV system included, unless it has something to do with the difference between the generation 2/3 NAV system (years 2002 & 2003) and the later versions.

I have a 2002 model (1st registered in Oct 2001) and it has a Gen 1 sat nav system. I understand that Gen 2 was in the 2003 model?

Yes, the 2001 had the Gen 1 NAVs and the 2002 & 2003 had the Gen 2/3 NAVs.
