I was having my doubts since the car has great record of reliability. Between this, motor mounts and a door speaker I am substantially ahead.

Now the fun begins. Apparently the part is NOT available in southern California. I have to agree with Talwang, I never heard of this failure from wear and tear. It's usually associated with collision damage. So the hunt is on at other distribution centers. The time estimate for repairs is now two weeks. I keep everyone posted and will do my best to speak with the mechanics about what they find.
I'm glad that you are fully covered under warranty. Keep the faulty part, someone here would be clever enough to re-engineered the part.

That's crazy for a Lexus part. You can almost buy a brand new engine for that price!!

"Now the fun begins. Apparently the part is NOT available in southern California."

Kind of makes me wonder after we get few years away from discontinuation from the SC430, will parts take even longer to locate and/or still be available? Or, are a lot parts common to other cars, such as ISC convertible, etc.

Agree, parts will take longer for sure, but knowing Toyota/Lexus they tend to keep original parts available for about a good 15+ years from the last date of that particular model run.

I use to have a 1985 Celica that I gave to friends daughter and I can still get original parts from Toyota - such as rubbers surrounds for the rear hatch.

The car (all original) has done over 500,000km and still going strong. Only blows a little smoke on startup - could be the crappy oil that they have been putting lately.

And to clarify my issue a little more....apparently the part (64520-...) is actually several parts according the FSM diagram. It's the trunk lid hinge, and is the opposite side the stut attaches to, not the trunk lid itself. I'll keep you all informed of the results.

That's the piece they were looking at on my car. While they were in there one of the tech accidentally knocked one of the cables off the hinge and tried cycling the top. At that point it did throw a code, but they soon figured out the cable just came off and they put it back and all worked fine. I can't imagine what would go wrong with that part except for limit switches and/or motor. If they do replace that hinge the whole roof has to removed and put in a jig to make sure everything is lined up and calibrated properly. That's what my dealer was telling me. They said they got the jig back in 2002 and it's never been removed from the crate...that's how rare roof problems are with these cars.

Mmmmmmm, I'm feeling better already.

I'm sorry about y'alls troubles with your tops and I hope this thread stays short while few others, including me, don't share your experiences.

Thanks so much!
GREAT to see all the sharing of info! Glad my problem might have contributed to others getting their toys fixed as well!

That part is nearly like 1/4 of the price of a secondhand SC430 in the states?
