That's kind of what I was thinking...but wishing never hurt anyone, right? LOL!

I tried opening the roof yesterday and i got a blinking red light on the switch.. I checked the tonneau cover (if i can call it that) in the trunk, tried with park, neutral, handbrake engaged, disengaged, brake applied nothing worked... It would just blink

Its a 2010 still under warantee and all but was surprized; car is still too new.. Any ideas?

Is there some reason you wouldn't simply take it to your dealer?

IMO the roof is very reliable, but with age, it's just like my right knee and from time to time may need some work. While the document was written about the then "new" 2002 model, most of it is relevant to all SC430 model production years.
Okay, so my issue has still not resolved itself. When I open the roof it seems that on the trunk lid close the motors are out of sync. When I close the roof it seems they are usually in sync.

I was reading in the PDF that there is a PWC between the two roof and trunk motors that measure current being sent to each motor to make sure they are in sync. Would this be an issue with the roof ECU or the individual motors?

I will try the tip of putting down the windows first before operating the roof to see if that helps. I will also see if the car is throwing any codes.

Can I get the codes checked by Advanced Auto or does it need to be checked by the Lexus dealer?

Thanks in advance!

The autoparts store is a hit and miss issue on both the scanner and if the person manning the counter knows how to use it correctly.

With all this talk about roof failures....mine did just that on the 4th of July. Took it in since it's covered under warranty and the stealership says it's the left luggage link hinge (64520-24030) .... Repair estimate $4K the part alone is $3500....

Insurance/Warranty company balked and is sending out an adjuster on Monday. Dealers says its routine on high dollar repairs.... My issue will be fit and finish once repair is complete.. I'll be keeping a critical eye on this one.

Did you check the trunk lid opener main switch in the glove box?
You need to turn it on to activate the convertible top.

This is the first time I have heard that part is broken.
That is a lot of money to get it repaired.

So, what exactly did your roof do? Can you explain in detail? Can these parts not be had for any less on Sewell or eBay?

On the 4th, my wife, who usually doesn't like to drive with the top down, decided she would as it was a beautiful day.
Trunk lid opened perfectly, windows went down, roof unlatched, then moved a couple of mm and stopped. It actually looked as if the driver's side really didn't unlatch. Reversed the procedure and all closed properly. Tried again, same result. Disconnected battery to let all ECU reset, same result. Plus no trouble codes. Looking at the hinge, it not that complicated piece of engineering, but obviously necessary.
With the Sewell discount the part is still $3250.00 and knowing Lexus engineering I suspect several hours of labor... I'll know more on Monday after the adjuster works with the dealer and makes some sort of determination.
Oh I agree that's a wheelbarrow full of money, and if both hinges failed (there's one on each side), you'd be looking at $7K or more for repairs....

So you're talking about the roof hinge?

I'm talking about the trunk lid not closing in sync. I'm also wondering if it's the hinge. I have all the trunk lining out and brining it to Lexus tomorrow to see if there's any codes and so they can see what I see. Unfortunately this bill is all on me, so found another trunk hinge from an '06 on eBay for $500. I'll do the work myself.

Cross your fingers for me that it's something simple...and cheap would be nice!

Let's keep each other posted on our issues here.

Thanks Bob!

On a good note I did clean the engine bay and debadge the rear...see below!

Good luck on the hinge install. Take pics along the way if you can. The rear de-badge looks nice and clean with the BP "L" Did mine last weekend and replacing the chrome with BP in a few days.

Wowza! $3,250?! For a hinge?! For that kind of jingle I'd sure be taking a very close look at the hinge and looking for a machinist that can renew your existing hinge. I'd even guess that the result would be better than new and you'd end up doing both the right and left sides at once; and saving money as well.

Well, not really, i just dont have much time on hand to waste at the dealer and i just dont believe its a problem.. I mean the car is practically new and with the reliability of these roofs advertised on here.. i thought i may have missed something.

I'f i dont get it to work by week's end, ill send it over..

TALWANG: The trunk lid opener main switch in the trunk is switched to on but i just remembered that i washed the car and kept the passenger window locked from the button on the driver's door.. maybe thats why

Need to get it checked out

Thanks

So got back from the Lexus dealer. No codes and they were completely stumped!?!?

They think it's because my trunk struts are shot. I will replace them and see if that fixes the problem. Of course now that I'm back both my VSC lights are on!

As for my case, and thanks to PLAYTM for letting me share his thread. The dealer called this afternoon and confirmed their diagnosis on the hinge. They also told me the warranty company agreed to pay for the repair. (4K+) I am so glad I bought the platinum warranty when I pick up the car two years ago. I was having my doubts since the car has great record of reliability. Between this, motor mounts and a door speaker I am substantially ahead.

Now the fun begins. Apparently the part is NOT available in southern California. I have to agree with Talwang, I never heard of this failure from wear and tear. It's usually associated with collision damage. So the hunt is on at other distribution centers. The time estimate for repairs is now two weeks. I keep everyone posted and will do my best to speak with the mechanics about what they find.

I believe this thread originally belonged to DaveyChan. So I too need to say thanks for letting a bunch of us hijack this thread in the common goal to resolve a few different roof issues here!

Thanks so much!
