If you want to reset the ECU without losing your seat and stereo settings, perform the following procedure:
1. Get in your car and insert key. (It doesn't matter if you close the door or not.)
2. Turn the key to the on (not start) position.
3. Press the gas pedal to the floor.
4. Hold the pedal to the floor for five seconds, then turn the key back to the "off" position (don't remove the key), then release the gas pedal.
5. Wait 2 minutes.
6. Remove key.
7. Done
Yes it works. Done it many times. Works on all years, 2002-2009.

Anyone know what I could possibly doing wrong? Has this method NOT worked for anyone else? I'm rather upset because I just bought my car from a Lexus dealer and it has 63k miles on it. I'm currently on a mini-getaway to Los Angeles, 5 hours from where I live, for the next week and just experienced the issue for the first time once I got to LA. I need to drive a lot while I'm here and cannot live with this problem. =/

Should this also work for a 2006 LS430? I know this post is old but I just tried this several times and it did NOT work. I have the Smartkey, I don't know if that makes a difference. I still inserted it per the instructions, turned it to 'on' (without starting it), pressed the gas pedal to the floor for 5 seconds, then turned the key to off (without removing it), then let go of the gas pedal, waited two minutes then removed the key. Still the same hard downshift issue.
