Default Coolant

What type anti-freeze (coolant) do you use in the sc430?
Thanks

The owner's manual for my year ('02) is not manufacturer specific but recommends ethylene glycol-based antifreeze solution that is suitable for aluminum engines. It recommends a 50% mix of antifreeze and distilled water. These days you need to be aware when you buy antifreeze because most of the manufacturers have "thoughtfully" introduced pre-diluted product so you don't have to go to all the work of adding an equal part of water. You would not want to dilute if you bought pre-mix.

Toyota Super Long-Life Antifreeze/Coolant is the same as what they put in at the factory. It has a distinctive pink color and provides maximum protection and durability.

Routine flush at 100K, it's compatible with non-metallic materials, it helps extend the life of water pump seals.

Follow up question for VVTiBob - the previous owner of my '02 SC had the coolant flushed and replaced with Toyota coolant as part of the fairly expensive 30K service and looking at the maintenance supplement it appears that was the recommended interval when the car was built. Can you clarify if that interval has changed, in view of the 100K miles you reference in your previous post? Is that an opportunity to save some money on a future service? Thanks.

Toyota coolant came in 2 varieties. Long life (Red, nondilluted) and Super Long Life (Pink, predilluted).

If you have pink from the factory, it will last up to 100-120k miles and then you have to drain every 60k miles.

If you have the red, then you'll want to drain it every 30k miles. Check the color of your coolant right now. Pink is backward compatible, but red is not recommended for use on cars that came with super long life.

The formulation changed some time ago on the Super Long Life thus extending the replacement/flush recommendation. But that's a recommendation and it really depends on your driving situation. If you've used the Toyota Red Coolant, then I believe the maintenance cycle was 30K recommendation. I would not mix coolant whatsoever.

Here is a picture of what you need...not sure if this is the best price, but this is the OEM recommended.

http://www.toyautoparts.com/catalog/...656+4294952319

They have it for $23. PART # W0133-1626273

I found an equivalent at Valvoline Instant Oil Change www.vioc.com and used their services (all fluids flushed and filled) last summer on my 2002 SC430 with 25k miles on it. The service and the quality of fluids was great! Even better price!!!
