Noob Odometer Question

Question Noob Odometer Question

The SC430 I am in the process of buying has a slight discrepency. At the advice of some members here, I pulled the service records from Lexus.com. It has a good service history, but there was an issue with the mileage.

The last service was in 12/12/09 and has a mileage listed of 41861. The car's odometer currently reads 41849.

Would it be easy to have a digital odometer tampered with, or could this just be some mis-keyed information at the lexus service?

I wouldn't worry about it if it was me. Most of the time you will see ridiculously low mileage cars that are older tampered with. I've owned many lexus vehicles for about 15 years now and yet to see odometer tampering, although I'm sure the best hackers can figure out a way!

Most likely what happened is what happens to me occassionaly and that is the service tech transposes the mileage wrong when they check you in...or the owner gave the wrong mileage as they got out of the car. If it said 21,XXX miles, I'd be worried.

There is a tremendous amount of work necessary just to get to the eeprom where the mileage data is stored on the speedometer. Then you'd have to have some very specialized equipment to alter it. I'd take a look at the rest of the history comparing mileage and interval, that is how much time passed between mileage/maintenance. Low mileage SC are not that unusual. My 02 has just over 50K and is going strong.

I concur with the above. Very unlikely that any odometer tampering transpired. What is more likely is a service tech or service advisor with bad hand writing, and a "6" mistakened for an "8." Milegage at the last service was probably supposed to be 41,661. Or maybe a "3" mistakened for an "8," maybe should have been 41,361. Just my 2 cents.
