AC compressor just died, document thread.
The AC compressor died in our SC430, it is a 06' with 40k miles. It is under warranty, thank god.
It was seizing up, dragging down the motor, actually it stalled the motor when I show it to my service advisor this morning, perfect
That is a weird issue, I don't even think the AC compressor in the Toyota Yaris would go bad before 150k miles.
I just want to document it and tell you guys.
I looked it up, the MSRP on the compressor is $1200, installation is a few hours.

Well like I said, I believe this is a very rare case, so don't be alarm by it, I just wanted to document it.
I started a thread like this regarding the air suspension on my LS430, and turns out a lot of people have the exact same problems. You never know until you bring it up.

But my feeling is, on bigger components like an AC compressor, even if you can get it from Toyota, the price differences is pretty small. Price differences on smaller item is bigger, oil filter, fluids, spark plugs.......etc.
I was able to do an internet search and come up with a new OEM (Not Remanufactured) including the clutch for $595. Still a lot of money but if you have a $75 vacuum pump at home you could install this and recharge the system for $30

norman52, thanks for sharing that!
It is always nice to be able to buy the same parts for much cheaper!
I don't need it at this time since Lexus is paying for it, but it is good to know for future reference.

I always shop. If AC DELCO can make a brand new Compressor for a Chevrolet for around $300 it just stands to reason that Denso can make one for Toyota/Lexus for around the same price. They both do the same thing. The only difference is the casting so they can mount to the engines.
Especially when this compressor is used on all the V8 Toyota/Lexus models.

Yes, most things are that way, but is the matter of finding it, is the challenge.
Premium brand always mark up the price, and it is understandable why they do that, if they can pull off making more money, why not? I would!
I remember reading on the Ferrari forum once, there is a hydraulic pump inside the automated manual tranny of the F355 that Ferrari wants $15,000 for it, yes that is correct amount of zeros!
So those Ferrari owners did some research and found an identical hydraulic pump with a different casting from a Fiat that sells for $500! The mark up on Ferrari parts is insane! I guess F1 racing funding have to come from somewhere

The Ferrari Air Conditioning Compressor is priced almost the same as the Lexus!
So what company is fooling whom? With the right catalogs and specs I am sure you would find that the Lexus part is a standard Toyota part and the Ferrari part fits a Fiat or Alfa. I think last year they sold more Ferrari's than Lexus sold SC430's!

That's for sure, only 271 SC430 was sold in 2008 in the U.S.
