Default Tire Rubbing....Please help

Though i am extremely happy with the rims i recently bought, i have a rubbing problem with them. Both front and rear offsets are to small (20, 25 respectively). Whether i go over bumps, take curves to fast, and even break my tires rub. The noise is quite annoying. How are those of you who have such offsets deal with this problem?

I have done some research on rolling fenders but am worried that it may cause structural defects in the body and paint, specifically stress fractures. The only other option i could think of is to raise the car an inch.

Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks guys

any body shop can roll the fenders withour mishaps.... I think that would be your best bet...it is suppose to cost about $50 a fender... My friend had his Benz done and it was slightly higher. He was mad at the price inflation but he could not deny the pleasure of not hearing any rub...keep me in the loop

Do a search on shaving fenders. This has been a long time practice on CL (I first did it on my Lexus 6 years ago) and I'd say it's the preferred method amoung CL members.

Rolling is for Honda's with thinner sheetmetal.

glen, sc430 is different, you can't just shave it, coz' the fender lining is done differently. you will have to do a lot more coz' if you shave it the fender lining will drop down

what's the width of your wheels? if it's just slight rubbing, you can just let it rub, once there is a hole on the lining, you are done.

i have 20s and i rub a little bit, used to be more, but now it's all good

Thanks guys

Bigmallik00: ill keep you in the loop. Ill probably get this taken care of next week.

Rominl: The wheels are 20x8.5 (+20) in the front with 245/35/20. The rear is 20x10 (+25) with 285/30/20. And the tires are actually shaving down, not the fender. i was thinking of cutting part of the inner fender out....would that work?

Tony: ur suggestion might be the most practical and least damaging. I dont think i will like it raised, because i do not have a body kit. How much did you raise yours and how?

Thanks again

Sorry, my bad.

I forgot I was in the SC430 section. I was thinking 300/400 not 430.

LOL, that's funny but yeah, sometimes a car being better isn't necessarily a good thing

ku, you mean the tires are shaved down a bit now? that's no good. how low is your car. the setup is actually not as aggressive as some i have seen here. granted with 20s you will rub for sure, but yours look a bit excessive. when you said cut the inner fenders, which part you talking about? my fender lining have holes here and there already and i am getting much less rubbing. the lining on the sc430 are pretty funny design, there are bumps here and that causing problems

I am running 20x9 20x10.5 +30's so its simular setups. I droped my car down pretty low on some Tein s-tech springs, bad idea It was tucking tire in both the front and the rear. However I was rubbing big time up front where it was cutting up the tire. I tried using a heat gun and for the liner and stuff. This worked ok but it was still hitting the top of the wheel well when I hit bumped and such so I had to buy some spring locks. Basically you jack the car up so the spring is decompressed put in the spring locks and it keeps from compressing, I would tie wrap these in place. But this gave me about .4" raise which reduced my rubbing considerably. This is just a temp till I get some coil overs but definently worth the $14 for two sets of spring locks purchased at my local pep boys. It looks like two peices of metal with a u shape for the spring to sit in and a two bolts with nuts to keep it from compressing. I am still tucking a little tire, and it still rubs a tad but def alot better than before

I found that a heatgun can warm the liner so that it is soft enough to mould with your fingers. As long as it isn't the metal on the fender. You could probably get the guards rolled and strech the liner to fit.

Hey guys,

sorry..its been a while since i have been able to get on the internet. been outa town. In response to the questions asked:

To my knowledge the car has never been dropped. The last guy that owned it b4 me didnt modify anything on the car. When i said the tire is rubbing off i literally mean the sidewall tire is slowly shavinf off. the tire is perfectly aligned with the fender edge so that is why it rubs off on the sidewall. Looks cool but this rubbing simply put just sux. Its to the point that i dont even want to drive this car. Anymore suggestions are welcome. thanks again for all the help. this week im going to go to the only shop in the twin cities that rolls fenders. hopefully it aint expensive. Otherwise im raising the car. thanks again.

Hi 02Ku, just read your thread. If you still have your SC430 and the wheel problem, you can have a wheel shop shave the inside centre of the wheels. This will increase the wheel offset and thus move the wheels inward.

JMai, I don’t think 02Ku still with us. if he is, the problem probably has been taken care 14 years ago.
Good info though.
