Read my post above again Yes it should work out depending on how you pack for the trip. Also drive to your destination with the top up for more luggage space, move all luggage bags into your motel room when you reach your destination & then you can enjoy it top down.

Default Alternative to spare

First, my experience has been that switching from the RF's provides a dramatically--not "slightly"--better ride, and it was a decision I have not second-guessed at all.

For those looking to do so who still want to preserve the SC's meager trunk space by not running with a spare, the alternative I have selected has been the purchase of a portable electronic air pump and a tire plug kit. This combination fits within the tool well of the trunk (takes no extra space) and allows me to repair a puncture on the wheel, refill with air, and get on my way again within 5 minutes for all but the most severe tire failures. Fortunately, I haven't had to use this solution yet, but the potential tradeoff of some time lost to repair a flat versus a better experience every time I am in the vehicle has been well worth it.

Speaking of flats, etc, has anyone ever had to jack up this car using the supplied jacking tools? I realize that I'm not as tough as I used to be when I was young (I also have a pretty bad back), but I was unable to get the darn thing up off the ground.

Agreed!!!! When I put the Michelin Pilot A/S on it was a night and day difference in ride, handling etc. A completely different (and IMO, better) car. Take care.

Here's another person who has trouble finding a place for a spare ... but he did work out a solution.

LOL I don't think the SC430 would be able to lower the roof with that set-up

Has anyone tried the Falken 512 non runflats? They are a sharp looking tire with great reviews.

Go to Google, type in Falken tires, then search. Go to several of the stores, edgeracing, epinions, & several others & you'll run across some reviews from magazines, etc. I have the 512's on my SC-300, (17s) excellent handling, ride, & very quiet.

Default mich pilot a/s

have 02 sc and changed the tires after the RFTs went bad at 25K....
have 55K now with the mich pilot a/s.... got 'em from tire rack....
will NEVER go back to orig RFTs.... much better ride and quieter....
rotated 'em this weekend and the rears were nicely wearing out and the fronts were not wearing in the inside track as i expected.... maybe the alignment was changed.... i don't know... but the orig. RFTs also wore out in the inside treads.....
i take the wheel cover off and keep the aluminum caps with me before i take it to the local discount tire shop - they will lose the alum. caps and strip the bolts when they put the covers back on.. after complaining what a pain in the *** it is to take off 40 bolts just to wheels offs the car.... which i agree with..... i just use a 5mm metric hex bit on my drill/driver to take 'em off.... then, hand thread 'em first and use the same to put 'em back on....

along these line the stock size for the sc430 runs 245/40/19. Tire racks conversion factor equates to 9.5 inch tires. Does this sound correct? It seems the popular rim setup is 9.0 up front and 10.0 in the rear.

the stock size is 245/40/18, i am not sure about the width of the rim though

but yes, a lot of people would choose to run 9 in the front and 10 in the back. with that, you should do 245 in the front and 275/285 in the back

A paltry 8.0" buddy. Should be 8.5" for 245 tires.
Good evening.

thanks for your help guys. My confusion stems from the conversion factor given on the Tire Racks web site. They divide the 245 by 25.4 with the result of 9.6 inches.
