Thumbs up SC430 Spare tire Kit substitute!!!!

I have seen the subject of the missing spare tire to our SC430's many times on the Forum and I would like to share with you my solution. I just about fell over when I found out how much Lexus wanted for their Spare kit. So I started to research a different path. I recieved many references to the Supra TT spare and found that it also was an item that was in HIGH demand. So more research led me to my solution. I purchased a factory RX8 spare tire kit and used the spare wheel, tire and wheel cover from it. It has the same size 17" wheel and tire that the lexus kit comes with but it is alloy. That means that it is lighter than the Lexus wheel. It is actually pretty good looking too. I purchased some quarter inch panel wood at the local Hardware store and using the existing trunk floor board made a duplicate of it. I then cut away the section that the spare tire occupies and then I had my new floor panel. I painted it silver to match the original one and there I had it! My kit. The original carpet fits on top of the new floor piece perfect. I have included pictures below of what I did! Also of the kit that can be picked up on Ebay for like $200.00 shipped!

Yes, there is one listing at $149.50 and one $169.50 with 47.00 shipping. Each of these listings have multiple quantities for each auction. I think 3 for the first and 10 for the second. FYI I have nothing to do with these auctions, just passing on a good deal!

Isn't The Lexus Spare A T145/70? This Rx Spare Is A T125.
Does It Have The Same Amount Of Lugs, Etc And Fit Perfectly?

Default Very Interesting Spare Alternative

Thanks for sharing your solution with us. I too have found it difficult to find a Supra spare and am still with out a spare. Beggers can't be choosy, they say but I find the tire cover ugly. I will have to investigate with Lexus parts and see if just the spare tire cover is available from them for the price I am willing to pay, say 50 bucks for the nice SC430 cover. If not, maybe I can pick up a junk yard temporary spare that will fit and keep it in my garage to take on trips to places where it may difficult to contact the AAA. (I will need the SC430 spare wheel/tire specs though, or better yet a complete list of 17" temporary spare wheels that will fit)

This is from an old post (04/05/06 - Post #75) and I can't guarantee the accuracy of his/her numbers but, the parts list, with prices for the spare tire kit is this...

1 42611-24430 wheel,disc $89.51
1 n/a T145/70R17 Tire, Tubeless (Bridgestone) $190.00
1 90942-05009 Valve $6.37
1 51900-91705 Carrier Assy, Spare Wheel $6.34
1 51913-24020 Plate, spare wheel mounting $15.15
1 51938-24010 Bracket,spare wheel carrier mounting $28.18
4 90105-06158 Bolt .38 ea
2 90541-09101 Cushion $2.21 ea
2 90541-09080 Cushion $1.54 ea
1 64711-24170-BO Matt, luggage compartment trim, rear $50.82
1 64716-24080-BO Cover,luggage compartment trim, rear $88.44
1 64771-24040-BO Cover, spare wheel $110.83
1 42668-14060 Label, compact spare tire caution $1.09

I'm one of the "suckers" who actually bought the Lexus spare-tire kit. It is nice that it all fits factory-fresh.

To make it look "right" with an aftermarket wheel, you'll need at least the spare wheel cover ($110.83), the luggage compartment cover ($88.44) and the luggage compartment mat ($50.82) = $250.09...and that doesn't include a wheel!

I picked up a slightly used kit for like $300.00...and yes, I've had opportunity (see picture in post #7) to use the spare; got me to work and to the dealer after work...worth having.

Do not known what the bolt pattern is for the Acura but the Lexus is 5x114.3 or 5x4.5.

i checked sewell and they have most of the parts. i have a toyota mini spare that i picked up on craigslist for $20. lexus is charging almost $300 for the wheel and tire. thinking about just ordering the parts in need and doing it myself for about $200 with the club lexus discount.

You have to be very careful about the spare that you get. It has to have an offset big enough to clear the Front Brake calipers. Most of the spacesavers will not clear the brakes of the SC430. Use Caution as you may get it on the car and it will not move an inch!

Question

FARCAS: Based on your above comment, it sounds like you have tried the RX8 spare on both the front and rear of your SC430. Right?

Also, will it fit on the 02-04 SC430's? How about the 05 and on?

Yes, I have put it on the car on both the front and rear. It fit perfect! Also I do not believe there is any difference between the 02 through the 08. The OEM wheels are interchangable.

didn't think about that. i might buy this kit plus the lexus cover. that would put it around $300.

The only thing that concerns me is the Mazda tire is thinner 125 vs 145 and that might be a factor on load according to Tire Rack.
