A few years ago, a cap in the display caught fire in my dash, before I could put out the fire, the wire harness was ruined. So I went to the pick a part yard, pulled another and installed. I thought all was good except there were some new issues. I have 5sp and I didn't know at the time that there are different harnesses for 5sp/AT. I've dealt with the issues but I have been always on the look out for a 5sp dash wiring harness and finally found one! I the dash, installed the 5sp harness but now I have no controls/power for the A/C control and stereo, these have a different harness so I've pulling my hair out trying to find the problem then it dawned on me, I changed that harness years back so can anybody tell me if the harness for these controls has different set ups for 5sp/AT?
A capacitor in the display caught fire in the dash? Do you mean from the factory HVAC display, factory stereo or the dash instrument cluster?
Different model years have different harnesses, yes. They’re further differentiated by: transmission type and CA or Federal Emissions with specific transmission type for each emission market.
1992-1994 is one series. Next is 1995, then 1996, then 1997, then 1998 and I believe 1999-2000 are the same. Again, variants within each of those model year series are broken down by transmission and emission types.
You need the factory wiring TSRM for the wiring harness of your SC chassis and also the factory wiring TSRM for the harness you’ll be converting to use with your model year of SC.
The harness that runs along the dash was ruined in the fire and replaced it with the AT harness not knowing there were different harnesses. The harness for the AC control/stereo I replaced a year later but there was no problem until now when I just installed the correct 5sp dash harness. Two completely different harnesses which is why I'm pulling my hair out. I'm going to reinstall the AT harness and see if that lets the stereo work again.
Found the problem! It turned out to be a faulty brain! There are probably two dozen plugs on the dash harness, and I didn't plug one in! Apparently you have to have have all of the plugs connected for everything to work. Who knew?
