Default fuel gauge problem

hey guys, my fuel gauge has been acting up as of the last few months. At times it is fine, but sometimes the fuel gauge just reads below E. This problem is on and off. I was wondering if any of you guys had an idea what this problem is and if so how do i go about fixing it?

agreed. the in-tank fuel level sensor has a contact pad that the arm on the float slides against. after some time, the contact patch becomes worn, and the two no longer make contact, causing the gauge to read nothing. good luck
