What year 2JZ-GTE?
Hey guys,
For awhile I have been looking into the GTE engine swap. I have searched the boards numerous times but I am still left with a few questions. The car getting the swap is a 96 sc300 5 speed. Since the SC is an OBDII vehicle, would I be better off buying a GTE that is also a 96 so that it will be OBDII also? And I am pretty sure in 1996 the supra turbo only was available in automatic transmission. Would I be okay getting a 96 engine and using an ECU from a manual supra off of a different engine or even a different year? Does the OBDII require any addition wiring or different setup from the OBDI cars? Believe me I have learned how to thouroghly use the search function. Any info is appreciated.
Edit: Any suggestions of where to find or buy supra front clips or engines?

I believe that the 93.5 2JZ-GTE had the fastest stock year because of increasing emmissions standards but they probably all have the same capabilities. Just look for one with the lowest wear. Just a word of warning I think in some states it is illegal to have a motor older than the car. But then again most of the mods are illegal anyways.
This brings up another question. Since the 2JZ-GTE is a legal setup in the car does that make it legal in the SC300? It should be carb certified. Just food for thought I guess.

yes; because the OBD II portion of your car is in the ECU/wiring harness/emissions control
when you swap in a new motor you'll be swapping out the ECU and emissions control at a minimum (the wiring harness too maybe depending on how you're doing it)

Thats going to make finding an engine easier.
Now does anyone have suggestions on where to look for front clips or engines? IVe tried thepartstrader and the classifieds here as well as on supraforums, anywhere else?

I'll confirm, the GTE engines are pretty much compatible, regardless of the year. It is the harness and ECU that determines whether it is OBDI or OBDII. Most of the diagnostics, are, of course, related to the engine operation, so likely either ECU should function okay. Most people think it is easier to work with the OBDI rather than the more-particularly OBDII setup
Im not an expert on this but it seems like whatever differences there are between OBDI and OBDII cars, putting an OBDII engine into the OBDII sc would make the car much easier to pass emisions. I think with 96 and on cars the emissions testing consists of plugging a computer into the diagnostic port and reading signals the ECU sends. Would the emmisions tester fail the car automatically if I came in there with a 96 car but a different engine that had a OBDI ecu and diagnostics? Im going to have to check out state laws but I definitly want this car to be fully emissions passing and reliable.
