Default URGENT! Torque converter installation problem.

Hi all,

I left my car at a tranny shop yesterday to have a PI torque converter installed. Now they just called to tell me that it doesn't fit ?!?
I got the TC from Steve Ganz so I'd assume it's the right one. Can anyone tell me if the PI TC is actually different in size than the OEM? How can the TC be identified to make sure it's the right one?

Thanks!

The PI unit is smaller.

How is it not fitting? do the holes not line up?

Like Keith said the PI converter is smaller. Set the two converter's next to each other and make sure the six holes are spaced the same( 6 bolt's to attach converter to the flywheel) and measure the diamater of the center where converter mounts to the tranny. If the two centers measure the same and the 6 holes in the converter line up with the OEM converter, then the guys doing the job are lame! Good luck let us know what happens.

Well, turns out that they were worried because it's not the exact same size, but even more because it's full of dirt and garbage inside. Looks like the protective cap got lose inside the package, and now they got to open it up and clean it ... this gets more expensive by the hour

Default TC

I installed the "purple dragon" on my SC400 about a year and a half ago. The dragon IS smaller in diameter, but a little "fatter". If you align the splines with the pump (in the tranny) it should slide right in, just like any TC. May take a couple of rotations, but it will "plop" in (if there is no crud or obstructions).

One thing I found out about the Dragon, when I installed it, I lost the front seal in the tranny at about 120mph.... what a MESS! After speaking with the technical guy at PI (can't remember his name), he said that the converter bolts MUST be "shaved" about .100 to acount for the fatter converter an allow clearance under extreme stress. I followed his instructions, and haven't had a problem yet, and I have had the car at 145. PI may have fixed this, but a year and a half ago, it WAS an issue. PI has a great tech. support guy, so call him directly. Also, Steve G. will make sure it is right... he has always been great to work with, and is one of the few folks I will go to when getting parts now.

Hope this helps!
