What's installation like? Can I literally take off the stock intake and put the bfi intake in without having to do any mods or whatnot?

Install should be as easy as peeing on your 2 fingers

your car doesn't need it. that box with holes cut out doesn't really do anything.

you will benefit more by going to home depot, getting some laundry ducting, and installing it from inside the bumper to your intake area.

He's talking about the version with just the cutouts on the box, no added ducting.

Yes it will pull in more air, but is it any better off being hot air from the engine bay?

I had done the same thing and it makes a noticeable difference. may not be as good as bringing in air from outside but the front of the airbox is basically right behind the headlight and not in the middle of the hot engine bay so it still does pretty decent.

the 12kw difference is about 16hp so its definitely doing something for that guy.

I haven't re-read the Planet Soarer page, but weren't those gains reached with the box sealed off from the engine bay?

It's no different, really, than complaints of cone filters lessening performance on the SC. They pull from the same space as an unsealed box would. The numbers I've seen for other cars (haven't seen any for the SC) indicate that under-hood temps will remain high even in "out of the way" corners like behind the headlights if not sealed off.

The best is if you seal it off like the planet soarer page, but if you are too lazy to do that then I think the next best is the holes in the front of the airbox.
no one is doing a before and after dyno to compare for a 10hp gain so people will just have to decide for themselves.

the cone air filter sits further back some with the adapter and gets purely engine bay air, all hot.
the holes in the front are sort of a half half compromise that does seem to work, I tried the cone filter, and the bfi with just holes in the front, and stock, and and the best one by the seat of my pants dyno was the bfi with the holes in the front. it was much better than the cone filter, the cone filter completely ruined the power band. stock was better than the cone filter, but seems like it was restricted a little bit, or its all just in my head. I have a turbo and intercooler now so yeah large air filter sucking in hot air and I couldn't be happier but in my more stock days I rocked the basic BFI with a drop in k&N filter.

I find that an intercooler and turbo are pretty good for cooling air AND power gains

BFI definitely gives you the impression of being faster. Not many people will dispute that. It adds some noise when you're hard on the gas and helps get more airflow to the filter area.

I liked it. Worthwhile mod that gives you instant gratification. Just don't expect a miracle.
