So i was reading a Speedhunters article about a JZZ30 Soarer that was the victim of a fire. The article mentioned that the fire was started in the rear of the car near the rear tail light wire harness. That made me remember of a thread posted here a while ago about some other guy who also had a fire near the rear of the car, similar to what is described in the article. (Thread here.) I searched around but I couldn't really find anything else on this and none of the insurance auctions have any burn damaged SC's for viewing right now, could this just be a freak coincidence?
INTIMAZY, are you referring to the people who get around the hyperblink issues by tucking an unused bulb behind the trunk liner to fool the resistance requirements? If using the correct harness for the tails, I can't imagine there's any danger of electrical fire. Maybe if doing something sloppy with wiring in resistors...
I have a weird feeling these may be 92-94 cars that had swapped to 95 or 97 style taillights.
Or it may just be that factory antenna motor shorting out???
Anymore details on the cars?
The car that was posted here on the forums is a 92 with 92 factory tails, and the JZZ30 on SH is a JDM soarer so I don't really know for sure. It has 97+ tails though, no telling if they were replaced to be like that or not.
The focused point of the fire appears to be the Tail light section rather than the antenna hole judging from the picture, so I doubt it has anything to do with the antenna.

Yessir. I ran an eBay resistor (yea yea I know) and caught mine smoking up against the trunk panelling before any fire occurred. I'm guessing the guys who just cover up the extra bulb probably have a bit of a heat issue as well.
My friend has an sc300 with factory tails and for whatever reason it got hot inside the trunk on the drivers side. He sold the car but he was always sketched out by it.

yep. resistors will dissipate the power through heat. if the power ratings too low, it will get extremely hot and inevitably let the magic smoke out
alot of the JDM soarers run a single exhaust down the passenger side, maybe has something to do with it also.
I never understood the whole extra bulb or resistor thing, I chalked that up with other things I would never do that I read about on the internet. there are better fixes for that stuff on this very forum.
