Default How to read Transmission Codes

is it the same as using a scanner to check a check engine light. I was driving my 95 sc300 today at 40mph and the O/D off light was blinking and then went away. Also the transmission doesn't shift into overdrive at all. What's up with that and how do I check the transmission codes?

Moved thread. How many miles? Most tranny issues are caused by an ECU with leaking caps.

It has 124,000. I was able to read the code it was a 42 which is a speed sensor. Which one? The 2 wire or the three wire speed sensor? My MPH gauge works but my car wont shift into overdrive. Would the transmission speed sensor be at fault here and where are both sensor locations on the car? Thanks!
