Hello,
Got my first check engine light in my 97 sc400 w/180k miles. Car is running fine. Know it needs Brake lines, lower control arm on pass side, and a serpentine belt change(common pwr sterering leaking occurring finally)
Just passed emissions 8/1, no smoke, smells, or any signs of issues.
Did fill tank with $50 yesterday, normally only put in 15-30 here and there. Heard gas caps usual culprit. I took it off and put it back on, no change yet. Should I be worried in meantime or am I good to go for now? Having the issues above repaired in coming weeks.

Sort of pointless to ask if you should be worried without telling us the CEL code, isn't it? Take it to one of the auto parts stores that does free code checks.

 

If it was the gas cap the CEL would go off after a few days of driving it. You may also want to "reset" the ECU. Unplug your Negative battery terminal for a few minutes, then put it back on. Drive around for a few miles see if your CEL comes back on. I would get your codes read first like mentioned above tho because there is a code that is related to the gas cap.

Are you sure you put the right gas in?

 

Okay, so autozone checked code. turns out bank 1, sensor 1 O2 is bad. What do I search to find this particular one, where located on car, and anyone have a good barely used one? Will change out all 4 next year if I decide to keep car but want to fix temp now.

When I had the same issue I went ahead and got a scan tool to look at everything to make sure I replaced the right one. the one I got hooks to the laptop and its just plug n play. it gives a ton of information. things you don't think abut like the tps sensor and what-not.


I recommend doing this. it'll save you time instead of replacing a working O2 sensor, finding out you did the wrong one, and then redoing the job until you get the right one.
