Thumbs up Newbie Here!!

Hi all.I am a newbie.
I have been lurking and reading up on the SC400/300 for a while now. I have been searching for an SC400 for several months, the right one. Well today I found one I like. It's a 92 SC400,104k miles and loaded with every option. It is in Imac.condition. I paid $7900. and I feel I got a real bargain. It's a 2 owner and comes with a 90 day 4500 mile warranty with option to upgrade to 3 years/54k miles. All books and records come with the car. I will be picking the car up later this week and can hardly wait. Kinda feel like a kid on Christmas morning, even though I am in my early 40s. Never owned a Lexus before. I thought I would buy a nice used one and if I like it I can always upgrade to a newer one later.

My question is,does anyone know what the Maroon Color is called on the 92? And would you purchase the extended warranty?

BTW,you would never know this car is a 92 model by looking at it.

Welcome to CL, you should use the search function befo---oh wait, nevermind!

J/p, anyway, you should register your car (by VIN#) at Lexus.com. Once you've done so, you can look up all the options and features of your car, including the official color name. That's the only way to be completely sure of the color name. As far as the extended warranty, I would not buy it, especially with it's coverage limitations. These cars rarely ever break to the point where an extended warranty would pay off. Just ask all the folks in the 100,000+ mile club. Besides, anything on that car that is prone to common breakage can be fixed for much cheaper with the solutions found here on CL. That's just my take... ~76,000 miles, and absolutely no problems whatsoever on my car (knock knock!!) .

RTLEXSC,

I would pick the car up, look at all the things that normally go wrong with the SC. They are all in several posts. Power steering, control arms, altenator, etc.. Maybe even pay a 3rd party mechanic to REALLY look at these parts for wear that could be covered under the 90day warranty. If they all look good, then I would not think about the extended.

Welcome to CL.

Thanks guys. This board has been very helpful in researching the SC. I already know most of the common problems with these cars from reading here. I think I might just take the car to a 3rd party before the 90 day warranty runs out. If everything looks good I will prob. not buy the extended warranty and instead just put those funds toward some upgrades...

Thanks again

RTL,

Depending on what type of extended warranty they are offering, you might consider buying one. I bought a 93sc400 with 70k miles on it. The warranty cost about 2g's, but it covered everything electrical-window reg.'s, seats, sunroof, etc, ac, power steering, engine and other systems. I used it at 75k, the power steering pump and rack/pinion-Lexus dealer $1800, cost me $50. And right before the warranty expired AC compressor/dryer-Lexus dealer $1700, cost me $50. That was a two year warranty, so look at cost, what's covered, and how long. One thing though after finding this forum, I'm confident that I can find a solution to whatever problem my SC might have. Just my 2 cents.

Welcome to CL. Have fun with your new car. I have had mine for a couple of months and I still grin when I see it parked in front of my house.
