98 was also the first year of the gated shifter
99-00 had the 3 spoke steering wheel
^ ya there was no vvti pre 98 for either 300 or 400.
Anyways, I dont think $2800 is all that horrible depending on what exactly is all damaged or needs to be repaired. The wheel could just be a broken control arm, new fender - all which shouldn't cost more than a few hundred bucks to replace. For $3500 you could have yourself a nice 97 RSP/blk interior that everyone on the forum would be drooling over.
Having said that though, I dont know the whole history of the car, it could be a piece of crap. Try talking him down to as close to $2k as you can, and I'd say you have yourself a decent deal.
