Let me start by saying I've been on this forum since January. I've read damn near every possible help thread/tutorial and everything in between in that short amount of time. I've been practically addicted to this site being my first car, and all of you guys have given me a ton of inspiration. After my first failure I've come to an ultimatum. Get a good SC(99-00) or move on period. With that said...



What would you value this car in it's current state?

2000 SC 400, Millennium Silver with Black Interior

Mileage 200,000.

Interior is mint.

Exterior overall is clean. Minor paint peel rear bumper, and normal front bumper scuffs.

Engine/Transmission are supposedly 100%. AC Blows Cold, All Electronics work as new.

Wheels...unsure what they are.

Need's Control Arms, Struts/Strut Mounts, Engine Mounts, Transmission Mount, Catalytic Converter(s), and a Battery...roughly $1300 in parts.

It's 3rd Owner Car. Waiting on Carfax.

All repair work will be done by me.

KBB and Edmunds values are pretty far apart. Thinking Edmunds is far closer to actual value then KBB's though. It might be the newest SC 400 at only 13 years old, but at 200K things clearly start to fall apart. What other potential problems should I be looking at?

I really want a 2000 SC. My 92 has become pretty much a station car. Not reliable for long drives at all, nor worth putting any more money into. I need to be able to make a trip from NY to North Carolina without worries. I want this to be my daily driver, and a head turner down the line. I feel like if I don't buy this car I'm going to give up on SC's and get something newer.

 

Don't forget to inquire about the timing belt and water pump.

Trust me I'm inquiring about everything. If he's not willing to budge on the price any more and there are additional problems...I'm going to leave it where it is and look for a bike.

2000's are VERY rare and extremely sought after , they are like the holy grail of the SC world, at least in my opinion.

 

It's not about that to me, rare isn't as important as condition. If it costs more to fix then it's KBB value...then I'm not messing with it.

 

Well i got's me a 99,uh the value should be higher than the repairs, that car should be 5-6K maybe even 7, repairs should be waaaay lower than that since your going to do it, how is the interior? I'll totally buy it, seems legit.

 

Interior is clean except for the cracked drivers door trim down the middle which almost every SC has. Car needs brakes too(calipers/rotors/pads) but I already have new brakes on my old SC so I'll just use those if compatible I think/hope they are. Wish me luck guys going to pick this up tomorrow.

I dont know why people say the 2000 is the most sought after year. I would say the 1992, being the first year and if found to be in great shape and low mileage, that would be my choice.

If your 1992 is unreliable then fix it. Why go in debt for another SC or pay cash, and put that money in the current one you have. This way you know where you are with the maintenace, etc. if you buy this one, you have to start over and the seller could tell you you anything to sell the car. Having 200K for a 2000 is really high in my book, but that is my opinion. I say walk away. Do what you want, its your money and you will have to do maintenace on 2 cars now, plus, gas, oil changes, insurance, etc.

 

IMO, buying another car if your 92 isn't "up to par" isn't the best idea. Like Mark said, put the money into your 92 instead of getting somebody elses "problem". Your choice though, bite the bullet, it might actually be a good move...

 

As far as i know having a 2000 is way better than a 92, i would assume he's going to sell the 92, i would use the money i get from that and use that for the repairs.

 

So why start over? Just to have a newer higher mileage SC? I would compare the looks, performance, what it will take to get it right, compared to what you have already. Do what you want. JMO. .
