Has anyone ever successfully dumped the fly by wire throttle system for a traditional cable on the SC4? My SC4 has a surging problem with the system and I just don't trust it even if I was to get the problem fixed. I would rather go with a traditional throttle cable system and would like some tips from someone who has done the conversion.

Always thought sc4's were throttle cable...

Mine isn't. It has an electronic throttle control. So -if it is messed up like mine is -you can give input to the throttle control with the pedal -but whatever it spits out to the throttle body -can be completely random. So I am wanting to bypass it so that a cable goes directly to the throttle body with no electronics between.

Nope. Several of the 98-2000 400 model Lexus vehicles were equipped with a fbw throttle body..

Mine is a 92 with fbw -so does that make mine a freak?

Are you sure you're not confusing the drive-by-wire with the traction control throttle? All 92-97 SC's were drive-by-cable for sure. I'm not sure about 98+. If you're absolutely sure it's drive-by-wire then you might have some sort of aftermarket modification.

The vvt-i SC300/400 are drive by wire...SC's before that are all cable controlled.

I will have to post some pics. It is not traction control. With the traction control -it says Traction Control on the back cover and also has dual TPS sensors. My throttle goes into a box -assuming cruise control and then there are two other cables out.

When you hit the throttle -the butterfly doesn't open right away -to reflect cable movement. It will eventually -but not right away. The throttle body has a mind of it's own so that pedal movement has very little to do with what the throttle actually does. Perhaps the cruise has gone bad internally? What is the other box linked to the TB by cable on the fender well? And what is the third cable going back down to the firewall?

You have traction control if you have two throttle position sensors. The cruise control is a small black box to the left of the engine bay. That delay you're noticing between gas and throttle plate is probably slack in the cables. Tighten ALL the cables and it should then be in sync.

If you still think your car is drive-by-wire, try pushing the gas with everything off. The main throttle plate should move, letting you know its drive-by-cable.
