what's up ali?! haven't spoken to you in a while.........i wanted to do this same project to upgrade the dash but ending up scrapping the project due to 2 reasons. 1). could not find the unit at the time- and 2).did not have enough info at the time to support conversion...but this will change once i find out more info about the previous post on the gated shifter project!.... call me and maybe we can put heads together on this one!!..peace!
NextLevel just reminded me why you are asking this question. I forgot you were working on the shifter conversion. Now it all makes sense. Keep up the good work my friend, I can't tell you how happy we would be if such a conversion was possible. Please keep me updated, I really think success in this area is possible and would be a huge benefit to us!
I think the cluster conversion and the shifter conversion can be considered two different projects. The cluster conversion is so we can get the brighter, newer display.
I am not too concerned with the shift points, since I have an auto. As long as I can get 99% of it working, I would consider it success.
Does anyone have the wiring digrams for the 97 and 95-96 cluster? Once we have that we can compare the wires.
The solution seems quite simple to me. Sell the pre 97 and buy a post 97. This is the best way to get the gated shifter and the display. I really don't understand the desire to change these items - but there are always reasons. Personally, I would use the money and time to increase performance.
well i don't know about anyone else, but getting rid of my car for a newer sc is not an option. i know my car inside and out and have been maintaining it for 4 years now(nothing at all wrong w/the car-mint condition-not interested in selling. the cluster/shifter were changed for (cluster-brighter dash in 97 w/other options added)and shifter(gated)for 98 and up.i don't see anything wrong with any kind of upgrade to the car whether it be ergonomically, aerodynamically, electrononically,or otherwise
....as long as it can be done, not look aftermaket (and not cost astronomic figures to do)to already enhance our already perfect cars.this is just my way of keeping my car current w/the times by adding welcome features to the interior while maintaing a stock appearance!
btw ali,i am working on a conversion for the backlit part of any dashboard 92-00(speedo,tach,gas) to cathode tube lighting found in the 95-00 ls400 for that very bright flourescent look-so if the only reason your getting a newer dash is for it's level of intensity, there are other options available-just hold tight!.................
oh and ryan, the project i will be working on is involving the 98 sc 300 4 speed gated auto shifter(thanx for the previous info on it)and getting it to work w/ our 4 speed auto dashboard!w/enhanced lighting to the 92-00 dash. whether i do this conversion myself or find someone else who can do it,i will keep everyone posted...........also, any help or info towards these projects are extremely welcome.........peace!
Glad you are working on it. I was planning on having my dash converted by lexusdash.com when they get up and running. I know everyone was outraged by the prices, $450 to convert the needles to blue and $150 extra (when done together) for cathode tube lighting, but you've got to pay for custom work.
For the statement about buying a 97+ (actually you have to buy 98+) for gated shifter, you have to consider a few things. Has everyone forgotten about tax, registration, and selling costs. This stuff is costly and a pain in the but. I know I am in the minority on this, but I prefer the earlier SC body style. I could have bought a newer, more expensive SC at the time, but I preferred the old body more.
Now after getting the car and learning more, I've got to say how much I would love to have that beautiful wood gated shifter. If I could put it in my car for about $1K, it would have been in yesterday.
Let's not forget that it is also sometimes fun to do upgrades and that you can actually do better than stock.
