I used 3m tape and it holds up just fine. The problem with plastidip is that you can't use a rag or microfiber towel when cleaning. All you can really do is spray with soap and water and hope it gets clean. Plastidip matte black has a funny grey/brown tone which bothers me as well.
You can actually use one of those super absorbent synthetic drying cloths to wash the car. It'll clean the dip without leaving any fibers or tearing it at all. I actually have my whole car plasti dipped and its held up great.
Here is mine in vinyl. I completed this in about an hour using two 1/2" long stripes of oracal matte black wrapping film. It came out pretty nice but I had to overlap a few pieces around the round curves. Most car dealers do this when wrapping window trim so I made it look pretty factory. I know my 2008 Honda Fit and my old 2003 MazdaSpeed Protege both have window trims wrapped with matte vinyl.
Here's a close up of my custom vinyl pillar that I completed last year. It's still holding up very well.
i prefer this method as i did do plastidip around 6months plus ago .. what i dont like about the plasti dip is the flat black , brownish color it takes on from being in the sun , dont like the parts that like to begin peeling after several car washes
can the vinyl wrap be purchased already in the width we need and from where or do you have to cut your own thickness
