Default A/C help needed

I've searched the forums and can't find the exact answer I'm looking for.

I have replaced my old dead a/c compressor a few months ago and I want to charge it up. It currently blows hot air. Here in Wisconsin, it is hard to find r12, and when i can find it, it is expensive. I can easily get 134a from Autozone, but I don't think i can just fill 'er up with that.

What do I need to do to be able to put 134a into my empty, dry ac compressor? I keep reading that it costs hundred of dollars to do the conversion, but I'm not seeing what is required to do it.

Can i just fill it up with 134a and be good? I have a friend in the HVAC business that can run a vacuum on the system so there is no air or moisture in it.

What can I do to charge my system?

I actually just had this done on my car, off-hand I think it was a couple hundred; I have the bill somewhere and I'll get back to you again when I locate it.

Don't fill up the reservoir with R134a without replacing a few parts first.

You definitely will need a new accumulator or a receiver-dryer that is designed for R134a systems. If there is anything in your system that requires repairs, (ie leaks, rusty condensor) you should fix/replace that as needed. Beyond that I don't know for sure. Can anyone else chime in?

Also make sure you fix a label showing that your vehicle uses R134a someplace very prominent in the engine bay.

bump this thread. my car just got out the shop and they didn't recharge the a/c now its up to me to do it. spent a pretty penny on a 90k, thought it included a damn ac recharge at least..

so, a couple hundred dollars just to convert to r123a? ive seen people just get and adapter and their a/c work just fine in 90's cars.... how many couples are we talking?

Newbie contributing already lol. The only reason I know is that I too have just purchased a new-to-me 94 SC300 NA-T in which the owner says the AC is recharged... The car is blowing warm air right now, but he tells me it is due to a resistor that needs to be installed in the AEM... We shall see. Bought R134 recharge kit in case at my local advance auto
