Hey so I reckon I'll be rebuilding my tranny this summer (~150k miles on my 1992 SC300, 2nd gear synchro is going). I found this handy PDF:

On pages MT1-3 and MT1-4, there are a lot of special tools needed (oil seal puller, gear removal, bearing remover, plates, pipes, etc.) I'll have access to a press and your standard mechanic toolset (open end wrenches, sockets, etc.), but I'm wondering how many of these special tools I'll need? Has anyone done this themselves?

PS. I know the rebuild kit is $300+ and I should just get a R154 because its better, but I'm interesting in keeping the W58 and doing this job myself.

I have rebuilt a few T5s with nothing more than some basic tools. The most exotic tool I used was a dial indicator. I also used a drift, snap-ring pliers, a couple torx bits, and big screwdrivers for pulling gears off the mainshaft .

On some trannys you can get away without gear pullers, but you have to be very careful not to pop teeth off of gears if you use the big screwdriver method. You may or may not HAVE to have a press depending on the design of the trans. Even so, every time I do tranny or diff work, I wish I had a press.

You will see by reading that manual that you need to measure certain clearances and use the appropriate snap ring to maintain spec. Pay attention to that closely. You may have to wait a week for a specific snap ring to show up, but do it once and do it right.

not very hard, a press is a must and you got that covered. just be a in a clean environment when you do this so if you drop one of them pesky locking ***** you can find it on the ground lol
