Exclamation First Tune-up doing it myself =]

What up CL? So I'm about to do my first tune up on my 92 SC400 and I need advice/help on a few things... My ride has 171k miles on it completely stock, first I wanted to know what kind of oil should I use and by what kind I mean weight and all that not the brand I know what the best is ... Second what kind of spark plugs would you recomend for me to use... Also I've noticed that when I shift into "park" the idle goes up to a little over 1000rpm, I know that can't be right. Is there a way I can fix that? It doesn't do it when I first turn the car on, the idle there is good at about 700-800rpm it only happens when I "park"... Thanks for reading guys and I appreciate any advice/help I can get

You "know" what the best brand oil is and won't accept any input on that, but you don't know jack **** about oil in general?

OP:

First, congratulations on the car and having the guts to do the work yourself!

The recommendations for oil look good but I failed to note which part of the country you are in. If, like me, you are in Southern California, or if you are in Arizona, 5w30 might be a little light. However, 5w30 is the preferred engine oil. Select an API grade SG or SH, Energy - Conserving II or ILSAC multigrade engine oil. (5.1 U.S. quarts w/oil filter change, 4.8 U.S. quarts without.)

NGK plugs are fine. Bosch Platinum is what I use. The Shop Manual recommends: PK20R11 for ND & BKR6EP11 for NGK plugs. (Caveat emptor - I have the 1994 manuals, not the 1992 manuals.) The correct electrode gap is 1.1mm, approx. 0.043".

Do you have the maintenance history on your new SC? It is probably time for ignition wires (test yours).

As you search the Forum and become more familiar with your car you will realize some things should be done at the same time even if the second component seems fine, e.g. on the SC300, few owners would change a waterpump without also replacing the timing belt. I don't know the combinations for the SC400 but if you search in the Forums you will find out what they are.

Many of us would not consider a slightly high idle in Park an issue at all.

Kind regards,
Wade
