Question Stinky AC!

Lately when I turn the AC on after letting the car sit without being turned on all night the next morning when I turn the car on and turn the AC on the air coming out of the wents sticks like crazy. Its a really bad smell. Smells like something crawled in there and died. Its smells like a modly, foul house with no AC on smell. It sometimes does it when I turn the car on even after just turning it off. Any ideas what it could be? Maybe a dirty AC filter if it has one which I'm pretty sure it does but I have no idea where it is. Does anyone know where it is? Its really annoying to wake up to such a bad smell. It used to smell like a new car smell but it turned into this. After I got the car back from the body shop it smelled nice. Anyways if anyone can help me out I REALLY need it. I cant stand that smell much longer.

Oh ya does anyone know where I can get REALLY bright white lights for the interior lights? I found some but I'm not sure if they're going to be white or a bluish white. I want something REALLY white and bright. Anyone change out their int. lights to something like this? Post the site or where they got them and what brand and model. Thanx!

I had to get into the AC airbox to retrieve a wayward piece of pine straw that was making noise against the fan. If you pull down the trim that is above the passenger side footwell, you should see the airbox that houses the fan motor. There is what I refer to as a debris bin to the left of the fan. The cover of this is held in place by two wing head bolts. If you were to open that cover, you might be able to clean out whatever stinks. My '95 SC300 did not have an AC filter, however. Also, I have heard of people using a liberal dose of Lysol introduced into the intake screen, and the Toyota place near me offers an evaporator coil cleaning that is supposed to take care of musty odors.

Do you turn your a/c off 2 minutes before you get home? If not the same thing happens to RX-7's. The cold air condenses in your vents, this will create moisture. If you car sits it will become sorta warm in there (not hot but as hot as your garage) and a warm damp place is great for mold. Try spraying some lysol in your vents and killing the molds and stuff and start turning off your A/C a little bit before you get home (the car should be cold enough to be comfortable for the last part of your commute) I don't know if that is your problem but I know it is very common.

Wow thats really good info. Thanx guys. I never thought about turning the AC off 2 minutes before I get home. That makes sense because the cold air would just sit there and the warm garage air is kinda musty and...well it just makes sense. I'll start doing that. I think that would fix my problem along with spraying some lysol in the wents and intake. I think that would fix it.

Just pull it down? Is it held in with clips?

I just went out to my car and pulled the bottom most plastic peice and it just comes right out. Its held on by some clips. It was too dark to see what the hell was inside and my flash light is broken so I have no idea if I opened the right peice but that was about the only thing I could open down there.
