Default 5 Speed Vs. Automatic

I'm considering doing a 5 Speed swap in my 96. What are the benefits if any of a 5 Speed over an Automatic?

....yup! And better drivetrain efficiency, slightly better gas mileage probably, less electronic interference and less that can go wrong/break/wear out!

You can build a decent auto and have far fewer problems if you want big power. You would never miss a gear or accidentally downshift in a auto. ALOT of the BIG power guys running over 1000 hp are running th400 chevy trannies and they are EVERYWHERE

for fun factor, the 5spd is the way to go especially if its a weekend cruiser. if its your daily driver where you have to encounter traffic alot, you start to appreciate the auto.

Well I'm not looking for BIG power. If I do boost it it will be very mild.

I do drive in traffic every day, but the manual wouldn't bother me.

The reason I ask is I found a complete W58 out of an SC300 for $235.00. I'm going to pick it up this afternoon.

There are a lot of things involved in doing a manual swap. Not hard, just alot involved.

But once you go boost youll want more.

Yeah, I know. I've probably read most posts and then some on tranny swaps. Other than power handling, and more drive train control, I haven't read about the other benefits of doing the swap.

Are you planning on boosting? If you just want a bit of power and like a manual, go for it... if you want a GOOD amount of power and like the ability to just cruise... auto aint bad... thats if you wanna build one.

Dude, for that price, EFFIN BUY IT! lol! Even if ou don't use it, you'll be able to sell it for at least that. If it's a wreck see if you can get all the other stuff, too, for some extra cash. THen you won't have to parts hunt later OR you could sell a "complete swap". My point is it's a good deal, haha.

Either way, swapping the W58 or building an auto, you're gonna spend some money. If he can get the whole setup out of this car then it'll be totally worth it. If not, it'll cost a couple grand to source everything OR to build the auto... I think it's just more of a preference.

I didn't think w58s were worth a lot. I got an r154 for my supra for 350 with a fresh rebuild. I've seen w58s for way cheaper and they are pretty common I thought.

For me, I like the auto and be able to stay in boost. Im looking to make a big power street car. Half the guys i work with all have sick cars or bikes and i would like to smash em. I hate breaking stuff and I like to just cruise.

Where did you pick up an R154 for $350.00 rebuilt?
